Easy Acupoint Location for Massage: Find Your Body's Reaction Point

No need to memorize hundreds of acupoints. Learn four simple methods to find your body's own tender spots, nodules, and reaction zones for effective self-massage and acupressure at home.

Many effective TCM meridian and acupoint health-preserving methods have been introduced in today's books, periodicals, and newspapers. Yet when it comes to actually putting them into practice, many people feel at a loss as to where to begin. The greatest difficulty is the fear of failing to locate the acupoints accurately.

The TCM meridian system includes the twelve regular meridians, twelve divergent meridians, eight extraordinary meridians, fifteen collaterals, twelve meridian sinews, and twelve cutaneous regions, encompassing more than seven hundred traditional acupoints. It is very difficult for a layperson to remember so many points, let alone accurately locate them.

If one cannot even find the acupoints, how can there be any talk of health preservation? In fact, locating acupoints is not as difficult as we imagine, because acupoints are like the alarm devices of our body. If we fall ill or if problems arise in the meridians and zang-fu organs, specific areas on the body will become sensitive. A light press will produce a pronounced soreness and distention, just like an alarm lighting up red and sounding its siren. This is what Chinese medicine means by the saying: "Whatever exists internally must manifest itself externally."

These specific areas are mostly located at key acupoints or along the pathway of a meridian, and some are at specific reflex points or reflex zones — such as the reflex zones used in foot massage. Therefore, it does not matter if you cannot find the standard location of an acupoint. Finding your own reaction points is far more meaningful, because these reaction points are not only "alarms" but also "regulators." By frequently massaging and pressing these reaction points, we can bid farewell to sub-health without even realizing it, regulate our constitution, and thereby achieve the effects of health preservation and wellness.

So this is how acupoints can be found:

Locating Along the Meridian Course: This is a relatively professional method. For example, if one has diarrhea, focus on finding tender points along the Spleen Meridian and apply pressure or moxibustion. This method does not require memorizing specific acupoints, but one still needs to know the general pathway of the meridian.

What if one does not know the meridian pathways? Here are even simpler methods.

Zang-Fu Organ Body Surface Projection Zones: The zang-fu organs have directly corresponding positions on the body surface. For example, for stomach pain, search within the body surface projection zone of the stomach; for abdominal pain, search within the projection zone of the abdomen.

For instance, patients with coronary heart disease and angina pectoris often have a tender point in the cardiac projection zone on the left side of the back. Pressing on it produces a strong aching, distending sensation, and even without pressing, the area may feel very uncomfortable. Some describe it as "like a rusty nail hammered into the back" — how vivid an image. This sensation may disappear with good rest, but worsen with fatigue, anger, or exposure to cold. It can very sensitively predict changes in the condition. Clinically, family members of the patient are instructed to help with daily massage, or to apply moxibustion when there are signs of deficiency cold. This can often alleviate the symptoms of coronary heart disease. Some people may not have coronary heart disease, but rather suffer from high work stress or emotional instability, which often manifests as chest oppression, shortness of breath, and palpitations. Working on this same area often yields excellent results for them as well.

Cross-Limb Point Selection: First, locate the disease site. Using the navel as a reference point, select points by crossing left-right and upper-lower. For example, if the left ankle joint is sprained, a tender point can be found at the right wrist joint. Pressing this tender point can relieve the symptoms of the sprain. As another example, sciatica typically begins in the buttock and radiates down the leg. A point of unusual soreness can therefore be found in the shoulder joint on the opposite side. Pressing this point can rapidly relieve pain. This is the "Buttock Pain Point" in Balance Acupuncture theory.

Holographic Reflex Zones: Holographic reflex zones refer to the foot reflex zones and auricular (ear) reflex zones. These reflex zones also do not require memorization. Purchase a chart, and whenever you feel any discomfort, simply consult the chart and apply accordingly. Here is another time-saving tip: find a relatively reputable tuina massage center, get a full-body massage, take note of your own tender points, and then go home and massage these areas every day.

Accurate Point Location Alone Is Not Enough

Simply finding your own reaction points and zones is not sufficient. You also need to understand what kinds of reactions may appear.

Tenderness on Pressure: This is a sensation of soreness, numbness, distention, and pain. Some people may also experience a characteristic where the pain sensation transmits along the course of a meridian. Moreover, the more severe the illness and the more severely the meridian is obstructed, the stronger the pain sensation. Massage the area every day. Once the meridian is unblocked, the pain sensation will become progressively lighter, and the physical symptoms will correspondingly improve.

Hard Nodules: People who frequently receive shoulder and back massages often have this experience. For example, when one sits for long periods or the shoulders and neck are excessively tense, nodules will appear in the tense areas. One acupuncture specialist has summarized a method for treating cervical spondylosis that involves directly needling the sites of muscle tension, especially where nodules are present, with definite therapeutic results.

Sensory Sensitivity: For instance, the skin may become prickly and itchy at the slightest stimulation. This manifestation mostly appears with some massage techniques that cover a relatively large skin area, such as the patting technique. When applying the patting technique, some people may find that it is not very painful, but the prickly itch of the skin is unbearable, and the skin may even rapidly turn red. In such cases, change to a half-clenched fist percussing technique. The force will be deeper and more penetrating, and the itching sensation will diminish. After percussing for a period, the physical symptoms can improve and the prickly itching will also disappear. At that point, moderate-strength patting along the meridians can be used for routine daily health care.

Temperature Changes: The most common example is that many people with a yang deficiency constitution have a very cold sensation in the lower back (at Shenshu). Some women, especially after childbirth, often feel that the lower abdomen is as cold as ice. The temperature difference with other parts of the body is very distinct and can be known with a single touch of the hand. For these individuals, moxibustion is the most appropriate therapy.

Select the correct reaction points, apply the right methods, and after a period of self-care and regulation, the pain at the reaction points will diminish, the hard nodules can shrink or disappear, and the originally cold areas can turn from cool to warm. By then, your health will have climbed to a new level.
