Luò Shí Téng (Chinese Starjasmine Stem) is a Chinese medicinal herb. It is the dried stem with leaves of Trachelospermum jasminoides (Lindl.) Lem., a plant of the Apocynaceae family. The stem is cylindrical, with a reddish-brown surface dotted with lenticels and adventitious roots; the leaves are opposite, leathery, elliptic or ovate-lanceolate in shape.

Dispels wind and unblocks collaterals, cools blood and reduces swelling.

Indications

Used for wind-dampness heat bi syndrome (rheumatic arthritis with heat symptoms), sinew and vessel spasms, lumbar and knee soreness, throat obstruction, carbuncles and swellings, and traumatic injuries. It is also used for sore throat, hematemesis, hematuria, and damp-heat turbid leukorrhea.

Modern Pharmacology

Anti-inflammatory Effect: The crude extract of Luoshiteng exhibits NO inhibitory activity. The main differential components are dibenzylbutyrolactone lignans, which possess anti-inflammatory activity. Analgesic Effect: Total flavonoids from Luoshiteng exhibit certain anti-inflammatory and analgesic effects. Antihypertensive Effect: It has cardiotonic, blood circulation-promoting, and blood pressure-lowering effects. Antibacterial Effect: It shows inhibitory effects against Staphylococcus aureus, Shigella, and Salmonella typhi. Sedative and Hypnotic Effects: It exhibits sedative and hypnotic effects. Anti-fatigue Effect: It exhibits anti-fatigue effects.

Ingredients

Lignans: Tracheloside, nortracheloside, arctiin, matairesinoside, arctigenin, etc. The main differential components in Luoshiteng are dibenzylbutyrolactone lignans. Flavonoids: Flavonoid compounds. Alkaloids: Indole alkaloids such as rhynchophylline, etc. Sterols, Triterpenoids, Ionone Derivatives.

Usage & Dosage

Oral Administration: Decoction, the standard dosage is 6–12g; may also be prepared in pills or powder, or steeped in wine. Topical Application: Appropriate amount, mashed fresh for application; or ground into powder and mixed for application; or juice extracted for application.

Contraindications

Contraindicated in patients with yang deficiency with cold sensitivity and spleen deficiency with loose stools. Incompatible with iron filings (Tiě Luò); contraindicated with Acorus (Chāng Pú) and Fritillaria (Bèi Mǔ). Should not be used in large doses when combined with antihypertensive drugs or vasodilators. Not suitable for use during pregnancy; use with caution in children. Not to be used by those with cold constitution prone to diarrhea.

Selected Formulas

For sinew and bone pain (Hunan Materia Medica) Take 1–2 liang of Luoshiteng (Trachelospermum jasminoides), steep in wine and drink. For arthritis (Jiangxi Herbal Medicine) Take 1 liang each of Luoshiteng and Wujia genpi (Acanthopanax root bark), and 5 qian of Niuxi gen (Achyranthes root). Decoct in water and drink, with white wine as a guide. For throat obstruction with dysphagia and wheezing (Jin Xiao Fang) Take 2 liang of Luoshicao, cut into pieces, add 1.5 da sheng of water, decoct to 1 da zhan, strain, and sip slowly. For swelling and pain due to toxic qi accumulation (Waike Jingyao, Zhitong Lingbao San) Take 1 liang of Guixiyao (Luoshiteng), 1 liang of Zaojiaoci (Gleditsia thorn), one large Gualou (Trichosanthes fruit), 5 fen of Gancaojie (licorice node), and 3 qian each of Moyao (Myrrh) and Ming Ruxiang (Frankincense). For each dose, take 1 liang of the mixture, decoct with equal parts of water and wine. For pulmonary tuberculosis (Jiangxi Herbal Medicine) Take 1 liang of Luoshiteng, 1 liang of Dini (Melastoma dodecandrum), and 4 liang of pig lung. Stew together, drink the soup and eat the lung, one dose daily. For traumatic bleeding (Jiangxi Herbal Medicine) Take an appropriate amount of Luoshiteng, dry in the sun and grind into powder. Sprinkle over the wound and bandage. For hematemesis (Jiangxi Herbal Medicine) Take 1 liang of Luoshiteng leaves, 5 qian each of Xuejiancao (Salvia plebeia) and Wuwei (a local fern). Decoct in water and drink.

Daily Consumption

Luoshiteng Wine: Take 50g of Luoshiteng (Chinese Starjasmine Stem), cut it into pieces, and steep in 500ml of white liquor. Seal and let it infuse for 14 days before consuming. Take 20–50ml daily. It can be used for sinew and bone pain. Luoshiteng and Pig Lung Soup: Take 30g of Luoshiteng and 150g of pig lung. Clean the pig lung thoroughly, then stew it together with Luoshiteng. Once cooked, remove the herb residue, drink the soup, and eat the lung. Take once daily.
