Huáng Pí Guǒ Hé (Wampee Seed) is a Chinese medicinal herb. It is the seed of Clausena lansium (Lour.) Skeels, a plant of the Rutaceae family.

Promotes qi circulation to relieve pain, and detoxifies to disperse nodules (or masses).

Indications

Digestive System: Epigastric and abdominal distension and pain, stomach pain, and food stagnation with distension due to qi stagnation. Pain-Related Conditions: Hernia pain, testicular swelling and pain, and dysmenorrhea. External Injuries and Skin: Infantile scalp sores, centipede bites, and wasp stings.

Modern Pharmacology

Antioxidant effect: The volatile oil from the seeds of wampee (Clausena lansium) exhibits strong scavenging activity against hydroxyl radicals and nitrites. Anti-inflammatory effect: Its phenolic extracts can inhibit inflammatory mediators such as nitric oxide (NO) and interleukin-6 (IL-6). Lipid-lowering effect: The active component “Lansiumamide B” has shown lipid-lowering effects in animal studies. Anti-photoaging effect: Its volatile oil has protective effects against ultraviolet-induced skin photoaging damage in mice. Antitumor effect: Its volatile oil can inhibit the proliferation of mouse melanoma cells and induce apoptosis. Antitussive effect: In traditional medicine, salt-pickled wampee seeds are commonly used to relieve throat discomfort and dry cough.

Ingredients

Volatile Oils: 42 components have been identified in the seeds, accounting for 97.78% of the total volatile oil content. These mainly include alkenes, alcohols, and others. Amides: Abundant in content and are the main bioactive components. Among these, Lansiumamide B has the highest content. Others: Also contain amino acids (such as arginine, γ-aminobutyric acid, etc.) and various phenolic components.

Usage & Dosage

Oral Administration: Decoction, the standard dosage is 4.5–15g. Topical Application: Appropriate amount, mashed for external application.

Contraindications

Traditional medicine holds that this product has a certain degree of toxicity and should only be used externally; internal use is strictly prohibited. Modern sources suggest that pregnant women and patients with gastric ulcers should use it with caution.

Selected Formulas

For stomach pain and abdominal spasmodic pain (Guangzhou Military Unit, Common Chinese Herbal Medicine Manual) Take 3–5 qian of Huangpiguohe (Wampee seed). Decoct in water and drink. For boils on the scalp of children (Bencao Qiuyuan) Take Huangpiguohe, grind with water and apply. For centipede bites (Lingnan Caicai Lu) Take Huangpiguohe, crush and apply to the bite.

Daily Consumption

The seeds of the wampee fruit (Huang Pi Guo He) can be ground into powder and mixed with food for consumption, or used to make an infusion (steeped in hot water) for drinking.
