Penis et Testis Cervi
Aliases:Lù Shèn (Deer Kidney), Lù Chōng (Deer Penis), Lù Jīng Jīn (Deer Penis Tendon), Lù Yīn Jīng (Deer Penis), Lù Chōng Shèn (Deer Penis and Kidney).
Lù Biān is a traditional Chinese medicinal material. It is the dried external genitalia (penis and testes) of male Cervus nippon Temminck (Sika deer) or Cervus elaphus Linnaeus (Red deer), animals belonging to the genus Cervus of the family Cervidae. Lù Biān was first recorded in Mingyi Bielu (Records of Famous Physicians).

Indications
Indicated for kidney-deficiency consumptive disease, low back and knee pain, deafness and tinnitus, impotence, seminal emission, premature ejaculation, uterine cold infertility, and thin leukorrhea. Also used for chronic orchitis, insufficient lactation, and sexual neurasthenia.
Modern Pharmacology
Kidney-tonifying and bone-strengthening: Proteins and peptides from deer penis show kidney-tonifying and bone-strengthening activity at the cellular level. Improvement of sexual function: Wapiti deer penis peptides, mainly short-chain polypeptides, enhance organ index, T, LH, and NO levels, and alleviate renal and testicular lesions. Anti-fatigue: Extracts from sika deer penis exhibit anti-fatigue effects. Renal protection: Aqueous extract of deer penis protects against cisplatin-induced acute kidney injury. Anti-aging: Alcohol extract of deer penis shows anti-aging activity in Caenorhabditis elegans aging models. Immune enhancement: Deer penis enhances immune function.
Ingredients
Amino acids: Contains about 17–19 types, with glycine, glutamic acid, and proline being the highest. Total amino acid content is 84.24%, with essential amino acids at 17.08%, the highest among deer products. Fatty acids: Contains 7 fatty acids including linoleic acid and palmitic acid, with linoleic acid being the highest. Nucleosides: Contains adenosine, xanthine, hypoxanthine, uracil, uridine, etc. Polyamines: Contains putrescine, spermine, spermidine, etc. Steroid hormones: Contains 13 types including nandrolone, androstenedione, methyltestosterone, testosterone, norethisterone, etc. Inorganic elements: Rich in inorganic elements. Collagen: Relatively high content.
Usage & Dosage
Oral administration: Decoct 6–15g in water; or use in pills or powder; or cook and eat; or make into a paste. External use: Appropriate amount.
Contraindications
Use with caution in those with a constitutionally yang‑excessive pattern. Contraindicated in those with yin deficiency and fire hyperactivity. Contraindicated in those with febrile diseases or stomach fire.
Selected Formulas
For low back pain and knee soreness (empirical formula) Take 200g of Lu bian (deer penis) and 200g of Duzhong (Eucommia bark). Soak in wine and drink. For kidney qi deficiency with deafness (Sheng Hui Fang, Lu shen zhou) Take one pair of Lu shen (deer kidney, remove fat membrane, slice), and 2 he of rice. Cook with fermented soybean juice into congee, add five flavors, and eat on an empty stomach. For five overstrains and seven injuries with yang qi decline (Sheng Hui Fang, Lu shen zhou) Take one pair of Lu shen (remove fat membrane, finely slice), 2 liang of Roucongrong (Cistanche, soaked in wine overnight, scraped, sliced), and 2 he of rice. First cook rice with two large cups of water, when nearly done add deer kidney, Cistanche, scallion, salt, and pepper, then eat. For impotence and uterine cold infertility (Northeast Animal Medicine) Take one pair of deer kidney, 30g of Buguzhi (Psoralea fruit), 30g of Roucongrong, 30g of Gouqizi (Goji berry), 15g of Jiucaizi (Chinese chive seed), and 15g of Bajitian (Morinda root). Grind together into powder, make into 9g honey pills. Take one pill each time, twice daily. For blood deficiency in women with lumbar and knee pain and infertility (Zhongguo Yixue Dacidian) Take deer kidney and boil into a gelatin, mix with Ejiao (Donkey-hide gelatin) and take.
Daily Consumption
Wine infusion: Take one Lù Biān, 2500 ml of white wine, and combine with sea horse, gecko, and other ingredients. Steep for 7 days before drinking. The whole Lù Biān may also be soaked in white wine above 40% alcohol, with other Chinese herbs added, and consumed after 1 month. Congee: Take 15 g of Lù Biān, 60 g of Cistanche, and 200 g of polished rice. Soak the Cistanche in wine overnight, scrape off the wrinkled skin, and slice. Finely slice the Lù Biān. Cook the rice into congee, then add the Lù Biān and Cistanche when the congee is nearly done. Finally, season with salt and consume. Soup: Lù Biān can be stewed in soups, such as Lù Biān Yang-Reinforcing Soup. Extract: Lù Biān can be boiled into an extract for consumption. Stir-fried: Lù Biān can also be stir-fried and eaten.

Selection & Storage
Store in a dry container, sealed, in a ventilated and dry place, protected from insects. It may also be stored in a cool, dry place, protected from moisture and insects. As deer penis has a strong fishy odor and high fat content, it is recommended to wrap each piece individually in plastic wrap.
