Zǐ Yáng Huā (Hydrangea Flower) is a traditional Chinese medicinal herb. Also known as Xiù Qiú Huā, it is the flower of Hydrangea macrophylla (Thunb.) Seringe, a plant belonging to the family Saxifragaceae.

Modern Pharmacology

Antimalarial effects: Exhibits significant antiplasmodial (anti-malarial) activity. Stimulant effects: Shows stimulatory effects on the isolated intestines and uterus of animals. Other activities: Modern research has shown that hydrangea flower also possesses anti-inflammatory, hypoglycemic, hepatoprotective, and antitumor effects.

Ingredients

Hydrangea flower mainly contains skimmianin, hydrangenol and its glycosides, alkaloids, and other components.

Usage & Dosage

Hydrangea flower (flower): For oral administration, decoct 9–12 g in water. For external use, it may be decocted in water for washing, or ground into juice and applied topically. Cardiandra (rhizome): For oral administration, use 12–15 g of fresh product, which may be stewed in a double boiler; or 4–5 qián of fresh product (approximately 12–15 g).

Contraindications

Toxicity: The alkaloids contained in this product are highly toxic. It should not be used long-term or in large doses. Dietary contraindications: During the medication period, avoid eating sour, spicy, mustard greens, radish, and other foods.

Selected Formulas

For malaria (Zhejiang Folk Common Herbal Medicine) Take 9g of Baxianhua (Hydrangea macrophylla) leaves and 6g of Huangchangshan (Dichroa febrifuga). Decoct in water and drink. For scrotal eczema (Fujian Materia Medica) Take 7 flowers of Fentuanhua (Hydrangea macrophylla). Decoct in water and wash the affected area. For throat ulceration (empirical formula) Take the root of Fentuanhua, grind with vinegar to extract juice, dip a feather in the juice, and apply to the affected area. For various injuries (Zhejiang Tianmushan Medicinal Plant Records) Take 12-15g of fresh Caoxiujiao (Hydrangea) rhizome, slice, add yellow wine and brown sugar, steam-cook until done. Take once before each meal.

Daily Consumption

For oral administration: decoct in water and take orally. For external use: decoct in water for washing, or grind into juice and apply to the affected area.

Medicinal Parts

The flower variety uses the flower for medicinal purposes; the blood-activating and stasis-resolving variety uses the rhizome for medicinal purposes.
