Stenosolenium saxatile (Pall.) Turcz.（亦作 Arnebia saxatilis Benth. et Hook.）
Aliases：Zǐ Tǒng Cǎo (the whole plant and root are collectively referred to as this when used medicinally), Bái Máo Cǎo (White-haired Grass), Fú Dì Wú Gōng Cǎo (Prostrate Centipede Grass), Zǐ Gēn Gēn (Purple Root Root), Jí Mù Gé (Mongolian medicinal name).
Zǐ Tǒng Cǎo Gēn is a traditional Chinese medicinal herb. It is the root of Arnebia saxatilis Benth. et Hook., a plant belonging to the family Boraginaceae. This plant is a perennial herb with a fine conical root; the root bark is purplish-brown and contains a slightly purplish-red substance.
Efficacy & Actions
Clears heat, cools the blood, stops bleeding, and relieves cough.
Indications
Indicated for hematemesis (vomiting blood), lung-heat cough, and common cold. It may also be used for joint pain, epistaxis (nosebleed), and incomplete measles eruption.
Usage & Dosage
For oral administration: decoct in water, 6–9 g; some sources also document 9–12 g or 6–15 g.
Selected Formulas
For hemoptysis and hematemesis (Inner Mongolia Chinese Herbal Medicine) Take 9g of Zitongcao (Onosma hookeri) root, 15g of Tusanqi (Gynura segetum), and 9g of Xianhecao (Agrimonia pilosa). Decoct in water and drink. For small joint pain (Medicinal Plants of Desert Areas) Take 9g of Baimaocao (Zitongcao), decoct in water and take orally for long-term use. It may also be combined with 9g of Sangshen (mulberry fruit) for better effect. It can also be made into powder and taken.
