Impatiens textori Miq.
Aliases：Wàn Nián Jié, Jié Qī; Wàn Nián Bā, Chéng Nián (Huǒ Bā).
Bà Wáng Qī is a traditional Chinese medicinal herb derived from the dried tuber of Impatiens textori Miq., a plant belonging to the family Balsaminaceae. This plant is a perennial herb, about 60 cm tall, with a well-developed, fleshy root system and rounded or elliptical tuberous rhizomes. The stem is fleshy, swollen at the nodes, branched, and green with a purplish-red tint. Bà Wáng Qī was first recorded in the Sichuan Chinese Materia Medica (Sichuan Zhongyao Zhi). It is named “Bà Wáng Qī” (Overlord Seven) for its potent blood-activating and detoxifying effects, resembling a “king” among medicinal herbs.
Efficacy & Actions
Activates blood circulation and detoxifies. It is also recorded as having the effects of removing stasis and reducing swelling.
Indications
Indicated for traumatic injuries, stasis swelling and pain, abdominal pain, carbuncles and sores, and snakebites.
Modern Pharmacology
Modern pharmacological studies have shown that Bà Wáng Qī exhibits antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, analgesic, antitumor, hypoglycemic, lipid-lowering, antioxidant, and hepatoprotective effects.
Ingredients
The whole plant contains flavonoids including cosmosiin, luteolin-7-O-glucoside, luteolin, apigenin, chrysoeriol, and chrysoeriol-7-glucoside, among others.
Usage & Dosage
For oral administration: decoct in water, 9–15 g; or grind into powder, 3 g each time, twice daily; or steep in wine for consumption. For external use: apply an appropriate amount of fresh herb, crushed and applied topically to the affected area.
Contraindications
Use with caution during pregnancy. This product is slightly toxic.
Selected Formulas
For carbuncles and swellings (empirical formula) Take Bawangqi (a local herb), Sanxuecao (a local herb), Cisanjia (a local herb), and Shepaocao (a local herb). Crush together into a paste and apply. For foot infections and swellings (empirical formula) Take Bawangqi, crush into a paste and apply. For traumatic injuries with blood stasis and pain (empirical formula) Take 10g of Wannianba (a local herb) and 30g of Niuxi (Achyranthes root). Soak in 250g of white liquor. Take 10g of the medicinal wine twice daily.
Daily Consumption
Wine infusion: Bà Wáng Qī may be steeped in white wine to make a medicinal wine and consumed in moderation.
