Wannianbai is a traditional Chinese medicinal material. It is the dried whole herb of Asplenium incisum Thunb., a plant belonging to the genus Asplenium of the family Aspleniaceae.

Efficacy & Actions

Clears heat and removes toxicity, calms the liver and relieves convulsions, and alleviates pain. It also has hemostatic and diuretic effects.

Indications

Hepatitis (including acute icteric infectious hepatitis), infantile convulsions (infantile malnutrition), toothache, and snake bite.

Usage & Dosage

For oral administration: decoct in water and take orally, 15–30 g (0.5–1 liang, a traditional Chinese unit of weight, approximately 1 liang = 37.5 g). For topical application: appropriate amount, mashed for application. Use the raw herb for clearing heat; use the stir‑fried herb for hemostasis.

Selected Formulas

For acute icteric infectious hepatitis (Hunan Materia Medica, Volume 4) Take 45g each of the whole plant of Huweijue (a local fern), Fengweicao (Pteris multifida), Molai Juanbai (a local fern), and Jiyancao (Kummerowia striata). Decoct in water and drink. For infantile convulsion (Hunan Materia Medica, Volume 4) Take 15g of the whole plant of Huweijue, decoct in water and drink; or add 15g each of Banbianlian (Lobelia chinensis) and Gaoliangpaogen (Rubus lambertianus root), decoct in water and drink.
