Gou Mao (Dog's Hair) is a traditional Chinese medicinal material. It is the coat hair of the domestic dog Canis familiaris Linnaeus, a member of the family Canidae. It was first recorded in Mingyi Bielu (The Miscellaneous Records of Famous Physicians).
Efficacy & Actions
Interrupts malarial attacks and promotes wound healing (astringes sores).
Indications
Malaria, burns and scalds. In addition, Mingyi Bielu (The Miscellaneous Records of Famous Physicians) records that it "treats difficult labor"; Bencao Gangmu (Compendium of Materia Medica) records that "one qian (approx. 3.75 g) of the ash is taken as a decoction to treat pathogenic malaria; the tail hair is burned to ash and applied to fire injuries".
Usage & Dosage
For oral administration: burn to preserve the properties, grind into powder, 3 g. For topical application: appropriate amount, burn to preserve the properties, grind into powder, mix with a suitable base, and apply to the affected area.
Selected Formulas
For unbearable pain from burns caused by hot oil or boiling water (Meishi Jiyan Fang) Take dog hair, cut it finely, mix with melted glue, and apply to the burn. Continue until the scab falls off and healing gradually occurs.
