Dian Ya Pa Teng is a traditional Chinese medicinal material. It is the dried whole herb of Tetrastigma yunnanense Gagn., a plant belonging to the genus Tetrastigma of the family Vitaceae. It commonly grows on damp, shady rock faces and in broad‑leaved forests. It was first recorded in Honghe Zhongcaoyao (Honghe Chinese Herbal Medicine).

Dissipates stasis, reduces swelling, and connects (unites) bones and tendons.

Indications

It is indicated for fractures, traumatic injuries, and swollen boils and sores.

Usage & Dosage

For oral administration: decoct in water, 9–15 g. For topical application: appropriate amount, ground into powder for application; or fresh herb mashed for application.

Selected Formulas

For fractures (empirical formula) Take an appropriate amount of fresh Dian Ya Pa Teng (Tetrastigma yunnanense), Dama Yao (a local herb), Wuzhao Jinlong (a local herb), and Lv Putao gen (a local herb). Crush together and apply externally, changing the dressing once every three days. For traumatic swelling and pain, and rheumatic joint pain (empirical formula) Take 15-25g of dried stems and roots of Dian Ya Pa Teng. Decoct in water and drink, or combine with other herbs and soak in wine for oral use. For external use, take fresh Dian Ya Pa Teng, crush and apply to the affected area. For boils and red swellings (empirical formula) Take fresh Dian Ya Pa Teng, crush and apply externally.
