Niú Shé Huáng is a traditional Chinese medicinal material. It is the root, stem, or leaf of Callicarpa kochiana Makino [C. loureire Hook. et Arn; C. longiloba Merr.], a plant belonging to the family Verbenaceae.

Dispels wind and dampness, activates blood circulation and stops bleeding.
Indications
Rheumatic arthralgia, wind-cold cough, headache, gastric bleeding, and traumatic bleeding.
Usage & Dosage
For oral administration: decoct in water, 15–30 g (double for fresh herb); or crush and extract the juice for drinking. For topical application: appropriate amount, mashed for application; or grind into powder and sprinkle on.
Contraindications
Slightly toxic; should be used under the guidance of a physician. Use with caution during pregnancy.

For rheumatic pain (Fujian Folk Herbal Medicine) Take 60-90g of Changye Zizhu (Callicarpa longifolia) root, decoct in water and drink. For wind-cold headache (Fujian Chinese Herbal Medicine) Take 30g of fresh Changye Zizhu leaves, decoct with wine and water, and drink. For cold-type cough (Fujian Folk Herbal Medicine) Take 30g of fresh Changye Zizhu leaves, brush off the fuzz, add 15g of rock sugar, decoct in water and drink. For gastric bleeding (Minnan Folk Herbal Medicine) Take fresh Niushé Huang (Changye Zizhu) leaves, wash and crush to extract half a bowl of natural juice, mix with half a portion of honey, and take orally. For edema (Fujian Chinese Herbal Medicine) Take 30-60g of fresh Changye Zizhu roots or fresh stems and leaves, decoct in water and drink.
