Guǎng Xī Měi Dēng Mù (Guangxi Mayten) is a traditional Chinese medicinal material. It is the root, stem, and leaf of Maytenus guangxiensis C. Y. Cheng et W. L. Sha, a plant belonging to the genus Maytenus of the family Celastraceae. It was first recorded in Xinhua Bencao Gangyao (Compendium of New Chinese Materia Medica).

Modern Pharmacology
Antitumor effect: The ethanol extract of Maytenus guangxiensis exhibits significant anticancer activity. It shows inhibitory effects on liver cancer, Ehrlich ascites carcinoma, and other tumors, and has demonstrated good short‑term efficacy in patients with chronic myeloid leukemia. Anti‑inflammatory effect: Has demonstrated anti‑inflammatory activity. Cytotoxic activity: Compound 3 (11α‑methoxyurs‑12‑ene‑1β,3β‑diol), a triterpenoid isolated from Maytenus guangxiensis, shows good inhibitory activity against human cervical cancer cells (HeLa), with an IC₅₀ value of 10.68 μmol·L⁻¹. Other uses: In local folk medicine, the leaves are mashed and soaked in wine for both external application and oral administration to treat traumatic injuries, sprains, and low back pain.
Ingredients
Compounds (1–13): 2-Furoic acid, (+)-erythro-7-O-ethylguaiacylglycerol, vomifoliol, 5-methoxyguaiacylglycerol, 1,2-bis(4-hydroxy-3-methoxyphenyl)-1,3-propanediol, aurantiamide A, nicotinamide, (1R,2R)-1-(3,4,5-trimethoxyphenyl)-1,2,3-propanetriol, icariol A2, (-)-lyoniresinol, isolariciresinol, β-hydroxypropiovanillone, evofolin B. All are isolated for the first time from this genus and species. Triterpenoids: Maytguanone A (new compound), Maytguanone B (new compound), 11α-methoxyurs-12-ene-1β,3β-diol, lup-20(29)-ene-3β,11α-diol. Maytansine: The stems contain maytansine (an ansamycin macrolide) with significant anti-leukemia activity.
Usage & Dosage
For oral administration: decoct in water, 15–30 g; or prepare as pills or powders. For topical application: appropriate amount, fresh leaves mashed and applied.
Selected Formulas
For various tumors (empirical formula) Take 10g of Guangxi Maytenus (Maytenus guangxiensis) and 20g of Baihuasheshecao (Hedyotis diffusa). Decoct in water and drink. For traumatic injuries (empirical formula) ① At the early stage of injury: Take an appropriate amount of fresh Guangxi Maytenus and fresh leek root, wash and crush them, apply to the affected area, and fix with a bandage. Change the dressing every 2-3 days. ② One week after injury: Take Maytenus, Dahuang (Rhubarb), and Jianghuang (Turmeric), crush them, add 100ml of rice wine, stir-fry in an iron pot until yellow, then apply warm to the affected area and fix with a bandage.
