Horse mane
Aliases：Mǎ Jì Máo (literally "Horse Topknot Hair"), Mǎ Máo (literally "Horse Hair"), Mǎ Mán (literally "Long Horse Hair"), Mǎ Máo (literally "Horse Long Hair" — variant character), Mǎ Zōng (literally "Horse Mane"), and Mǎ Zōng (literally "Horse Mane" — variant character). (These are all alternative names for Mǎ Zōng, i.e., horse mane.)
Mǎ Zōng (Horse Mane) is a traditional Chinese medicinal material. It is the mane or tail hair of the horse Equus caballus orientalis Noack, an animal belonging to the family Equidae. It was first recorded in Rihuazi Bencao (Materia Medica of Rihuazi).
Efficacy & Actions
Arrests bleeding, stops leukorrhea, detoxifies, and heals sores.
Indications
Metrorrhagia and metrostaxis (abnormal uterine bleeding), leukorrhea (abnormal vaginal discharge), and carbuncles and sores.
Usage & Dosage
For oral administration: burn to ash, grind into powder, and take in pills or powders, 1–3 g. For topical application: appropriate amount, burn to ash, grind into powder, and apply.
Contraindications
Use with caution in patients with excessive pathogenic factors. This herb is toxic and should be used under the guidance of a physician.
Selected Formulas
For persistent metrorrhagia (Yanshi Jisheng Fang, Shihui Wan) Take equal parts of silk ash, yellow silk ash, mugwort leaf ash, horse tail ash, lotus node ash, lotus pod ash, oiled hair ash, red pine bark ash, palm ash, and cattail pollen ash. Grind into fine powder, mix with glutinous rice paste cooked with vinegar, and form into pills the size of waxberry seeds. Take 70–100 pills on an empty stomach with rice water. For protracted reddish and whitish vaginal discharge (Sheng Hui Fang, Ma Mao San) Take 1 liang of horse hair (burned to powder), 2 liang of Chifuling (red Poria), 1 liang of Muli (oyster shell, burned to powder), and 1.5 liang of Biejia (soft-shelled turtle shell, vinegar-brushed and roasted until yellow, rim removed). Grind into fine powder. Take 2 qian before meals with warm wine. For leukorrhea (Qianjin Yaofang, Baimalü San) Take 2 liang of white horse hair, 4 liang of turtle shell, 18 zhu of soft-shelled turtle shell, and 1 liang and 18 zhu of oyster shell. Grind and sieve. Take 1 square-cun spoonful on an empty stomach with wine, three times daily, increasing to 1.5 spoonfuls.
