Cyananthus argenteus Marq.
Aliases:Bǔ Cǎo Gēn (literally "Tonifying Grass Root"), Xiǎo Bái Mián (literally "Little White Cotton"), and Xiǎo Bái Jǐn (literally "Little White Brocade"). (These are alternative names for Mǎ Zōng Shēn, i.e., Cyananthus argenteus.)
Mǎ Zōng Shēn (Mazhongshen) is a traditional Chinese medicinal material. It is the dried root or whole herb of Cyananthus argenteus Marq., a plant belonging to the family Campanulaceae. It often grows on dry slopes, sand dunes, or sandy areas among pine forests at altitudes of 2,900–3,600 meters. It was first recorded in Lijiang Zhongcaoyao (Lijiang Chinese Herbal Medicine).

Strengthens the spleen and removes dampness, relaxes sinews and unblocks collaterals (promotes meridian circulation and unblocks collaterals).
Indications
Spleen deficiency pattern: Fatigue due to spleen deficiency, and infantile diarrhea (diarrhea). Rheumatic bi‑impediment pain: Rheumatic pain and rheumatic arthralgia. Traumatic injuries. Infantile milk toxicity diarrhea (due to feeding on stagnant milk).
Usage & Dosage
For oral administration: decoct in water, the usual dosage is 6–9 g; or 2–3 qian according to the traditional Chinese weight system.
Contraindications
It should be used under the guidance of a physician. Pregnant women, women planning pregnancy, and breastfeeding women should inform their physician of their condition before use. If other medications are needed during the course of treatment, consult a physician or pharmacist first.
