Kǒng Què Wěi (Peacock Tail) is a traditional Chinese medicinal material. It is the rhizome or whole herb of Asplenium sarelii Hook., a plant belonging to the family Aspleniaceae.

Efficacy & Actions

Clears heat, removes toxicity, promotes diuresis, stops bleeding, and promotes tissue regeneration.

Indications

It is commonly used for influenza, red, swollen and painful eyes, tonsillitis, cough, jaundice, enteritis, dysentery, gastrointestinal bleeding, traumatic injuries, sores, boils and toxic swellings, burns and scalds, etc.

Usage & Dosage

For oral administration: decoct in water, 15–30 g. For topical application: appropriate amount, decoct in water for washing; or mash and apply.

Contraindications

Contraindicated in patients with Spleen‑Stomach deficiency‑cold.

Selected Formulas

For dry cough without phlegm (empirical formula) Take 30g of Kong Que Wei (a local herb), decoct in water and drink. For jaundice (empirical formula) Take 30g each of Kong Que Wei and Louti Cao (a local herb), plus 15g each of Yinchen (Artemisia capillaris), Qinghao (Artemisia annua), Huangzhizi (Gardenia jasminoides), and Heidou (black soybean). Decoct in water and drink. For hypertension (empirical formula) Take 12g of Kong Que Wei, 6g of Shuihao Gen (a local herb), 1 gallbladder of a soft-shelled turtle (Tuan Yu Dan), 6g of Pufu Jin (a local herb), 3g of Baishao (Paeonia lactiflora), and 6g of Sanxue Lian (a local herb). Decoct in water and drink. For insufficient lactation (empirical formula) Take 30g of Kong Que Wei, decoct in water, and take with yellow wine.
