Gāncǎoshāo (Licorice Root Tip) is a traditional Chinese medicinal material. It is the terminal parts or thin roots of Glycyrrhiza uralensis Fisch., a plant belonging to the family Fabaceae.
Efficacy & Actions
Purges fire, removes toxicity, promotes diuresis, and treats strangury.
Indications
Heat‑type strangury: characterized by scanty, painful and burning urination. Pain in the penis. Heat accumulation in the chest.
Usage & Dosage
For oral administration: decoct in water, the usual dosage is 1.5–4.5 g.
Contraindications
Use with caution or contraindicated in patients with Spleen‑Stomach deficiency‑cold.
Selected Formulas
For painful strangury (dysuria with pain) (Chishui Xuanzhu) Take 15g of Gancao Shao (the tip of licorice root), 3g each of Qingpi (green tangerine peel), Huangbai (Phellodendron amurense), and Zexie (Alisma plantago-aquatica). Decoct in water and drink.
