Herba Veronicae Javanicae
Aliases:Xiao Baihuo Cao (Minor Fire-Clearing Herb) (National Compendium of Chinese Herbal Medicine); Zhaowa Popona (Javanese Speedwell) (Dictionary of Chinese Materia Medica); Shenzi Cao (Kidney Seed Herb); Zhaowa Mao Popona (Javanese Hairy Speedwell) (Baidu Baike); Gongbuqu Dunmu (Tibetan).
Duozhi Popona (Javanese Speedwell) is the name of a traditional Chinese medicine. It is the whole plant of Veronica javanica Bl., a plant in the family Scrophulariaceae. It grows in moist grassy places on hillsides, roadsides, and by streams, and is distributed south of the Qinling Mountains and in Tibet. It is an authenticated variety of the National Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine's Terminology Standardization and Promotion Project, and is recorded in National Compendium of Chinese Herbal Medicine, Chinese Materia Medica, Dictionary of Chinese Materia Medica, and other herbal works.
Efficacy & Actions
Dispels Wind and disperses Heat; removes toxin and reduces swelling.
Indications
Mastitis; dysentery; traumatic injuries; sores and furuncles with swelling and pain (for external use).
Modern Pharmacology
Dedicated pharmacological research on Javanese Speedwell remains insufficient. The following findings are primarily derived from chemical and pharmacological studies on plants of the genus Veronica and are provided for reference: Antibacterial and anti-inflammatory effects: The whole plant of Javanese Speedwell contains flavonoids and phenolic compounds, which possess anti-inflammatory and antibacterial effects. Its flavonoid constituents can inhibit bacterial growth. Modern studies indicate that its extract has certain inhibitory effects on common pathogenic bacteria such as Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli, providing a scientific basis for its traditional external use in treating infectious skin diseases. Antioxidant effect: Plants of the genus Veronica mainly contain iridoids, phenylethanoids, flavonoids, and other glycosides. Pharmacological studies indicate that plants of this genus possess anticancer, anti-infective, antitussive, diuretic, and antioxidant effects. Swelling-reducing and pain-relieving effects: The saponin constituents in Javanese Speedwell can reduce local congestion and edema and relieve blood stasis and swelling pain caused by traumatic injuries. Its extract can reduce tissue swelling by inhibiting the release of inflammatory mediators. Immunomodulatory effect: Animal studies indicate that its polysaccharide constituents can enhance macrophage phagocytosis and improve non-specific immunity. Note: The above pharmacological findings are largely derived from comprehensive studies on the genus Veronica or preliminary experiments. Dedicated systematic pharmacological research on Javanese Speedwell (the whole plant of V. javanica) is still ongoing. Traditional actions and indications should remain the primary basis for use.
Ingredients
Javanese Speedwell mainly contains the following active constituents: Flavonoids: These are the principal material basis for its anti-inflammatory and antibacterial activities. Flavonoids such as quercetin, rutin, and myricetin have been isolated and identified from plants of the genus Veronica. Phenols and phenolic acids: These possess antibacterial and antioxidant activities. Compounds such as p-hydroxybenzaldehyde and picroside II have been isolated from related species of the same genus. Iridoid glycosides: One of the characteristic constituents of plants in the genus Veronica, such as veronicoside (benzoylcatalpol). Phenylethanoid glycosides: Glycosides isolated from plants of the genus Veronica. Saponins: One of the material bases for reducing local congestion and edema. Polysaccharides: One of the material bases for immunomodulatory activity. Note: Systematic chemical studies on Javanese Speedwell remain insufficient. The above constituents are largely inferred from research on plants of the genus Veronica.
Usage & Dosage
Oral use: Decocted in water, 15–30 g (0.5–1 liang). External use: Appropriate amount. Fresh material is pounded into a paste and applied topically.
Contraindications
Contraindicated during pregnancy. Contraindicated in breastfeeding women. Contraindicated in individuals with impaired liver or kidney function. Use with caution in individuals with Spleen-Stomach deficiency cold. When using Javanese Speedwell, attention should be paid to constitutional differences and potential allergic reactions. Side effects such as gastrointestinal discomfort and allergic reactions may occur. During use, avoid consuming large amounts of pungent, greasy, or other irritating foods, so as not to affect the efficacy of the medicine.
