Coix Seed and Small Red Bean Porridge (Dampness-Relief Classic)

Coix seed and small red bean porridge is the undisputed "number one classic formula" in TCM's dampness-relief dietary therapy – widely hailed as a "natural dehumidifier." Small red beans drain water, reduce swelling, and expel toxins, while coix seeds strengthen the spleen, leach out dampness, and ease tendons. Used together, they work in synergy – one purging, one tonifying – striking directly at the root of "dampness." Unlike ordinary red adzuki bean congee, the slender, firm small red bean is the authentic medicinal variety in TCM, far superior in diuretic effect. The porridge has a clear reddish-brown hue, a light and mildly sweet taste – beans turn creamy and starchy while coix seeds offer a chewy, bouncy texture. Unpretentious yet powerfully effective, especially during humid spring-summer seasons, rainy spells, or after prolonged exposure to air-conditioning. One bowl opens a "drainage channel" for your body, letting dampness quietly escape from within, leaving you feeling light and refreshed.

TCM Notes

Core effect – spleen-strengthening, dampness-draining & edema-reducing:Small red beans are rich in saponins (0.2%-0.5%), with clear diuretic action, promoting excess fluid metabolism and relieving edema and body heaviness;coix seed esters and polysaccharides regulate fluid metabolism and improve dampness-excess constitution. Together, they form the foundational herb pair for TCM dampness-related conditions (edema, arthralgia, beriberi, etc.). Heat-clearing, tendon-soothing & joint relief:Coix seeds are mildly cool in nature, clearing damp-heat – beneficial for joint redness, swelling and stiffness caused by damp-heat descending;small red beans detoxify and expel pus, aiding skin issues like acne and eczema of damp-heat origin. Gut microbiota regulation & stool improvement:Dietary fiber in coix seeds (8%-10%) and resistant starch in small red beans act as prebiotics, promoting beneficial gut bacteria while reducing excessive intestinal water reabsorption – improving both diarrhea and sticky, incomplete stools. Blood sugar & lipid modulation:Coix seed polysaccharides help regulate blood glucose and delay post-meal spikes;dietary fiber and plant sterols in red beans bind bile acids, reducing cholesterol reabsorption and lowering blood lipids. High-quality plant protein & minerals:Small red beans provide ~20% protein, coix seeds ~15% – complementary amino acids;also rich in potassium (~700mg/100g, crucial for diuresis), magnesium, phosphorus, and B vitamins, maintaining electrolyte balance and neuromuscular function.

Suitable forTypical "dampness-excess" constitution:body heaviness, fatigue, foggy-headedness, thick greasy tongue coating, sticky stools that are hard to flush, oily skin and acne Office workers with sedentary lifestyles, lack of exercise, and prolonged AC exposure Those with edema, puffy eyelids in the morning, or swollen legs in the afternoon Anyone needing regular dampness prevention during humid seasons or rainy weather People with high cholesterol or mild hyperglycemia (adjunctive support) Those with damp-heat type acne, eczema or other skin conditions (with accompanying dietary adjustments) Gout patients in remission (coix seeds promote uric acid excretion, but red beans contain moderate purine – consume in moderation)

Not suitable forPregnant women (especially first trimester):Coix seeds may stimulate uterine smooth muscle contraction – risk of miscarriage; strictly avoid unless prescribed by a doctor. Yin-deficient constitution with fluid depletion:dry mouth, dry skin, constipation, hot palms/feet, red tongue with little coating – diuretic formula will worsen fluid loss. Women during menstruation (normal or heavy flow):Small red beans promote circulation while coix seeds are cold – may cause menstrual stagnation or worsen dysmenorrhea; avoid during periods. Spleen-stomach deficiency-cold, extremely weak digestion, diarrhea upon cold food intake:Coix seeds remain cool (even after toasting) – may worsen cold abdominal pain and diarrhea; if you must consume, toast coix seeds until dark golden, and add 3 slices of fresh ginger + 2 red dates to balance the coolness. Severe hypotension:Diuretic effect may reduce blood volume and further lower blood pressure – consume with caution. Frequent urination or nocturia (non-dampness type):Diuretic action will worsen frequency – avoid. Those allergic to coix seeds or legumes (rare).
