Hawthorn and Red Date Tea

Hawthorn and red date tea is a classic home-style tea that is sweet, tangy, and gentle on the stomach. Hawthorn, sour and sweet in taste with a slightly warm nature, is known for digesting food stagnation, moving qi, and dispersing blood stasis – especially effective for meat and fat stagnation. Red dates, sweet and warm in nature, tonify the middle, nourish blood, and calm the mind. The "digesting" power of hawthorn and the "nourishing" power of red dates create a perfect balance – hawthorn helps transport and transform food, while red dates strengthen the spleen and nourish blood. The tea has a bright reddish color and a sweet-tangy flavor. It is especially suitable after festive meals to aid digestion, or for daily consumption by those with weak digestion or qi-blood deficiency.

TCM Notes

Digestive support & appetite stimulation (core benefit of hawthorn): Hawthorn is rich in organic acids (hawthorn acid, citric acid, malic acid), flavonoids, and vitamin C – it promotes gastric secretion and enhances pepsin activity, significantly improving meat stagnation and abdominal bloating. Modern research confirms hawthorn has heart-strengthening, lipid-lowering, and anti-atherosclerotic effects. Qi-blood nourishing & sleep support (core benefit of red dates): Red dates are rich in iron, vitamin C, B vitamins, and cyclic AMP (cAMP) – they promote hemoglobin synthesis and improve anemia. In TCM, red dates are valued for tonifying the middle, nourishing blood, and calming the mind, improving sallow complexion, palpitations, and insomnia. Warming the spleen & harmonizing the formula: The warm nature of red dates moderates the "qi-moving and blood-dispersing" power of hawthorn, preventing over-digestion from depleting spleen-stomach qi – making the tea effective without harming the body. Antioxidant & beautifying: Flavonoids in hawthorn and vitamin C in red dates work together to scavenge free radicals, delay aging, and improve skin condition. Lipid-lowering support: Hawthorn helps lower serum cholesterol and triglycerides.

Suitable forThose with dietary excess, meat stagnation, indigestion, or post-meal bloating Those with poor appetite or weak spleen and stomach Those with qi-blood deficiency – pale or sallow complexion, scanty menstruation (especially beneficial for post-menstrual women) Those with high cholesterol seeking adjunctive support Those needing to cut through grease after festive meals General population for daily digestive support (post-meal)

Not suitable forPregnant women (Strictly avoid!) : Hawthorn stimulates uterine smooth muscle contraction – large amounts may increase miscarriage risk. Strictly contraindicated. Those with hyperacidity, gastric ulcers, or duodenal ulcers (Use with caution or avoid!) : Hawthorn stimulates excessive gastric acid secretion, which may worsen pain and acid reflux. Those with spleen-stomach weakness without food stagnation (Avoid regular consumption) : Hawthorn strongly promotes digestion but can deplete stomach qi if consumed excessively without actual stagnation. Diabetics (Control portion size) : Red dates are high in sugar – reduce the amount of red dates, omit added sugar, and strictly limit portion size. Those with dental caries (Use with caution) : Hawthorn's acidity may erode tooth enamel – rinse mouth after drinking. Women during menstruation (heavy flow – use with caution; scanty flow – can consume) : Hawthorn has blood-activating effects – those with heavy flow should avoid during menstruation; those with scanty flow or dysmenorrhea can consume before menstruation. Those allergic to hawthorn or red dates (rare).
