TCM Notes

Chinese yam: Rich in mucilage and diastase, it protects the gastric mucosa and promotes digestion. Its mucilage and saponins help strengthen the spleen, nourish the lungs, and tonify the kidneys. Yam is low in calories but highly satiating, making it a good partial substitute for staple foods. Corn: Rich in dietary fiber and B vitamins, it harmonizes the stomach, strengthens the spleen, and benefits the lungs and heart. Corn's zeaxanthin and vitamin E provide antioxidant benefits. Together, they achieve the synergistic effects of strengthening the spleen and stomach, benefiting the lungs and heart, moistening the intestines, supplementing nutrition, and boosting immunity.

Suitable forThose with weak spleen and stomach, poor digestion, or poor appetite Those with weak constitution or recovering from illness needing gentle nourishment Those managing weight or seeking satiety Those with constipation or poor intestinal function (high fiber promotes motility) General population as a daily breakfast, snack, or meal replacement

Not suitable forThose with severe diarrhea due to Spleen-Stomach deficiency – yam has astringent properties and corn's high fiber may worsen diarrhea Diabetic patients with poor blood sugar control – both yam and corn contain starch; the paste has a significant glycemic index and may spike post-meal blood sugar Those with acute diarrhea or indigestion – high fiber may burden the intestines Those with damp-heat constitution or thick greasy tongue coating – yam's nourishing nature may aggravate dampness Those allergic to yam or corn Early-stage post-gastrointestinal surgery patients – should not consume high-fiber foods too early
