Meiguijia (Roselle Calyx) is a Chinese medicinal herb. It is derived from the calyx (the cup‑like structure at the base of the flower) of Hibiscus sabdariffa L., an annual herbaceous plant in the family Malvaceae.

It is indicated for lung deficiency cough, hypertension, and alcohol intoxication.

Modern Pharmacology

Modern studies have shown that the calyx extract has antioxidant, antitumor, cardiovascular protective, hepatoprotective, antihypertensive, laxative, and diuretic effects, among others.

Ingredients

The flower contains organic acids, polyphenols, anthocyanins, flavonoids, polysaccharides, volatile oils, and other chemical components. The organic acids include citric acid, malic acid, hibiscus acid, tartaric acid, etc.

Usage & Dosage

Internal use: 9–15 g in decoction; or steeped in boiling water.

Contraindications

It should not be taken together with other strongly acidic foods or medications, as this may increase irritation to the stomach and intestines.

Daily Consumption

1. Roselle Tea Take 3–5 g of roselle calyx, steep in warm boiled water, and add an appropriate amount of rock sugar or honey. Drink as a tea substitute. Long‑term consumption helps reduce total cholesterol and triglyceride levels in the blood, benefiting the prevention of cardiovascular diseases and aiding weight management. 2. Golden Lotus and Roselle Tea Take 1 g each of roselle, golden lotus flower (Trollius chinensis), and mu hudie (Oroxylum indicum seed). Steep in hot boiled water, add rock sugar to taste, and leave uncovered until the flowers open. This tea clears lung heat, soothes the throat, and is effective for bronchitis, cough, sore throat, and tonsillitis. 3. Roselle, Chrysanthemum, and Goji Berry Tea Take 1 g of roselle, 3 chrysanthemum flowers, 5 goji berries, and 1 boat‑fruited sterculia seed (Pangdahai). Steep in boiling water for 5–10 minutes, then add rock sugar to taste. This tea helps relieve throat discomfort, moisten dryness, and promote fluid production. 4. Hawthorn and Roselle Honey Drink Take an appropriate amount of roselle and dried hawthorn. Boil for 3 minutes, let cool, then add honey. Long‑term consumption aids digestion and strengthens the stomach. 5. Roselle Pork Rib Soup Take 10 g of roselle and 250 g of pork ribs. Add 800 mL of water and simmer for 3 hours. Season to taste. This delicious soup nourishes and beautifies the skin.
