Clematidis Radix Et Rhizoma
Aliases:Néng Xiāo (Able to Dispel); Tiě Jiǎo Wēi Líng Xiān (Iron-footed Clematis); Líng Xiān (Spirit Immortal); Hēi Jiǎo Wēi Líng Xiān (Black-footed Clematis); Hēi Gǔ Tou (Black Bone).
Wei Ling Xian (Clematis Root) is the dried root and rhizome of Clematis chinensis Osbeck, Clematis hexapetala Pall., or Clematis manshurica Rupr., plants belonging to the Ranunculaceae family.
Efficacy & Actions
Dispels wind and dampness, unblocks meridians, relieves pain, and removes bone lodged in the throat.
Indications
Primarily used for rheumatic arthralgia, numbness of the limbs, spasms and contracture of tendons, restricted movement, and bone lodged in the throat.
Modern Pharmacology
Anti-inflammatory and Analgesic: Water extracts of Clematis Root significantly reduce inflammatory cytokines (TNF-α, IL-6, IL-1β). Its anti-inflammatory mechanism is related to the regulation of the PI3K/Akt/STAT3 signaling pathway. Antitumor: Some studies suggest antitumor activity. Other Effects: Research has also revealed antidiuretic and antimalarial effects.
Ingredients
The chemical constituents of Clematis Root are mainly divided into volatile and non-volatile components, including: Triterpenoid Saponins (oleanolic acid, hederagenin, etc.) Flavonoids Lignans, Coumarins Alkaloids (protoanemonin) Volatile Oils, Organic Acids (palmitic acid), Sterols, etc.
Usage & Dosage
Oral Administration: Decoction, the standard dosage is 6–10 g; for bone lodged in the throat, it may be used up to 30 g. It can also be prepared in pills, powder, or macerated in wine. Topical Application: Appropriate amount, mashed for external application; or decocted in water for fumigation and washing.
Contraindications
Use with caution in those with Qi-Blood Deficiency: Its dispersing nature may worsen symptoms in individuals with depleted Qi and Blood. Use with caution during pregnancy. Avoid tea: Tannins in tea can react with the anemonin and protoanemonin in the herb, reducing its efficacy. Avoid noodle soup (Mian Tang): It is considered an incompatible food.
Selected Formulas
Wei Ling Xian Wine (from Zhong Yao Da Ci Dian) Ingredients: 500g Clematis Root, 1500ml white liquor. Preparation: Cut the Clematis Root into pieces, add the liquor, steam in a double boiler for 30 minutes, then filter. Efficacy: Dispels wind-dampness and unblocks meridians to relieve pain. Dosage: Take 10–20 ml each time, 3–4 times daily.
Daily Consumption
Simple Decoction: Decoct 6–10 g of Clematis Root in water and drink. It may be used as an adjunctive treatment to alleviate rheumatic pain and joint stiffness.
