Stir-fried White Hyacinth Bean (Chǎo Bái Biǎn Dòu) is a Chinese medicinal substance. It is produced from the dried ripe seeds of the leguminous plant Dolichos lablab L. (or Lablab purpureus (L.) Sweet) through the traditional stir-frying processing method. As a medicinal and edible substance, it is not only used in traditional Chinese medicine formulas but can also be incorporated into daily diets for dietary therapy and health maintenance.

Indications

Used for spleen-stomach deficiency, poor appetite, loose stools, excessive leukorrhea, summer-dampness with vomiting and diarrhea, and chest tightness with abdominal distension.

Modern Pharmacology

Antibacterial and antiviral effects: Stir-fried White Hyacinth Bean exhibits antibacterial and antiviral activities. Immunomodulatory effect: Enhances immune function. Antioxidant effect: Polysaccharides from White Hyacinth Bean show scavenging activity against superoxide anion radicals and hydroxyl radicals to varying degrees. Antitumor effect: Polysaccharides from White Hyacinth Bean inhibit proliferation and induce apoptosis in human gastric cancer cells (HGC-27 and SGC-7901). Neuroprotective effect: Polysaccharides from White Hyacinth Bean protect neuronal cells against hypoxic apoptosis. Hypoglycemic activity: Saponin components in earth-fried White Hyacinth Bean kernels show potential activity in the treatment of type 2 diabetes.

Usage & Dosage

Oral Administration: Decoction, the standard dosage is 9–15g.

Contraindications

Contraindicated in patients with spleen deficiency and stagnation. Avoid excessive consumption, as it may cause qi stagnation and spleen obstruction. Must be thoroughly cooked: White Hyacinth Bean must be cooked at high temperature before consumption; otherwise, it may cause symptoms such as headache, nausea, vomiting, and other toxic reactions. Pregnant women, women planning pregnancy, and nursing mothers should inform their physician before use for safety assessment. Use with caution in patients with yin deficiency and internal heat. Use with caution in individuals with allergies: Discontinue use immediately if allergic reactions such as skin itching occur.

For spleen-stomach weakness with poor appetite, vomiting, and diarrhea (Taiping Huimin Heji Ju Fang, Shenling Baizhu San) Take Baibiandou (white hyacinth bean, soaked in ginger juice, peeled, lightly stir-fried) together with Renshen (Ginseng), Baizhu (Atractylodes), Fuling (Poria), Shanyao (Chinese yam), Lianzi (Lotus seed), Yiyiren (Coix seed), Sharen (Amomum), Jiegeng (Platycodon), and Gancao (Licorice). Make into powder and take. For red and white leukorrhea (Yonglei Qianfang) Take Baibiandou, stir-fry and grind into powder. Take 2 qian each time with rice water. For cholera (Qianjin Fang) Take 1 sheng of Biandou (hyacinth bean) and 1 sheng of Xiangru (Elsholtzia). Add 6 sheng of water, decoct to 2 sheng, and take in divided doses. For wasting thirst with polydipsia (Rencuntang Jingyan Fang) Take Baibiandou, soak and peel, grind into powder, and mix with Trichosanthes root juice and honey to make pills. Take orally. For heart-spleen intestinal heat with dry mouth, tongue, and oral ulcers (Shengji Zonglu, Biandou Tang) Take 2 liang each of stir-fried Baibiandou and stir-fried Jili (Tribulus fruit). Coarsely grind and sieve. Take 5 qian of the powder, add 1.5 cups of water, decoct to 80%, strain, and drink warm.

Daily Consumption

Stir-fried White Hyacinth Bean Water: Take 30g of stir-fried White Hyacinth Bean, crush it, and decoct in water for about 30 minutes. Brown sugar may be added for flavor. It helps strengthen the spleen and transform dampness. Dampness-Resolving Digestion Tea: Take 15g of stir-fried White Hyacinth Bean, 5g of dried tangerine peel (Chén Pí), and 15g of hawthorn fruit (Shān Zhā). Place them together in a clay pot, add an appropriate amount of water, bring to a boil over high heat, then reduce to low heat and simmer for 20 minutes. Suitable for those with abdominal pain, bloating, and diarrhea due to food stagnation. White Hyacinth Bean and Chinese Yam Congee: Take 30g of White Hyacinth Bean (soaked for at least 4 hours in advance), 30g of Chinese yam (Shān Yào), 100g of rice, and 3 red dates. Cook them together into a congee.
