Aliases:Huáng Gǔ Yú (Yellow Bone Fish), Huáng Gū Zǐ (Yellow Aunt Fish), Huáng Wěi Diāo (Yellowtail Fish), Huáng Piàn (Yellow Slice), Huáng Wěi (Yellow Tail), Huáng Gū (Yellow Aunt).
Huáng Gù Yú is a traditional Chinese medicinal material. It is the meat of Xenocypris davidi Bleeker, a fish belonging to the family Cyprinidae. This fish is small in size, with an elongated, laterally compressed body, approximately 20 cm in length, a conical head, a blunt snout, and an inferior mouth. The back is dark greyish-black, the abdomen is silvery-white, with a pale yellow patch on the posterior edge of the gill cover, and the caudal fin is distinctly yellow. This herb was first recorded in Compendium of Materia Medica (Bencao Gangmu).
Efficacy & Actions
Warms the middle and stops diarrhea.
Indications
Indicated for stomach-cold diarrhea. It may also be used for stomach-cold epigastric pain, vomiting of clear fluids, and other conditions. In addition, it can reduce edema, promote the eruption of rashes, and relieve intoxication.

Modern Chinese pharmacology has further validated its effect of warming the middle and stopping diarrhea. Contraindications
Excessive consumption should be avoided. Excessive consumption may cause fever and thirst (from Yilin Zuanyao·Yaoxing).
Selected Formulas
For epigastric cold pain with watery regurgitation (empirical formula) Take one yellow cheek carp (Huanggu yu), add scallion and ginger, cook and eat. For diarrhea due to spleen-stomach deficiency cold (empirical formula) Take one yellow cheek carp, 3 slices of fresh ginger, and 50g of Shanyao (Chinese yam). Steam and eat once daily for 15 consecutive days.
Daily Consumption
Cooking: Take one Huáng Gù Yú (approximately 100–200 g), remove the scales and internal organs, wash thoroughly, and cook with seasonings such as scallion and ginger. Steaming: Take one Huáng Gù Yú, 3 slices of fresh ginger, and 50 g of Chinese yam. Steam together until fully cooked and consume. Boiled juice: Boil Huáng Gù Yú in water, strain to obtain the juice, and drink. This can help stop stomach-cold diarrhea.
