Carnis Macaca mulatta
Aliases:Mù Hóu (Washing Monkey), Hú Sūn (Glib Monkey), Wáng Sūn (Royal Descendant), Mǎ Liú (Horse Stay), Jū (Macaque).
Mí Hóu Ròu (Monkey Meat) is a traditional Chinese medicinal material. It is the meat of the Rhesus Monkey (Macaca mulatta Zimmermann) and the Stump-tailed Macaque (Macaca speciosa F.Cuvier), animals belonging to the family Cercopithecidae. The Rhesus Monkey is a primate with a slender build, no whorl on the crown of the head, short shoulder hair, and a relatively long tail about half the length of its body, with cheek pouches. The Stump-tailed Macaque is larger, weighing up to 15 kg, with a very short tail of only about 6 cm, and a red face in adulthood. Its medicinal use was first recorded in Zhenglei Bencao (Classified Materia Medica).
Efficacy & Actions
Dispels wind-dampness, tonifies the Kidneys, and strengthens the Spleen. It is also recorded as having the effects of tonifying the Kidneys, invigorating Yang, and astringing and consolidating essence.
Indications
Indicated for rheumatic bone pain, neurasthenia, impotence and spermatorrhea, infantile malnutrition (Xiao Ji), and hematochezia (blood in stool).
Modern Pharmacology
Currently, specific modern pharmacological research on Monkey Meat is relatively limited. Its traditional therapeutic effects are primarily based on traditional Chinese medical theory and clinical experience.
