Anser cygnoides domestica Brisson
Aliases:Bái é Zhī (White Goose Fat, from Qianjin Shizhi / Essential Formulas for Emergencies - Dietetic Therapy).
Bái é Gāo (White Goose Fat) is a traditional Chinese medicinal material. It is the fat of the domestic goose Anser cygnoides domestica Brisson, an animal belonging to the family Anatidae. It is the oil extracted by rendering the fat of the domestic goose, white in color like ointment, hence the name “Bái é Gāo” (White Goose Ointment). Bái é Gāo was first recorded in Mingyi Bielu (Records of Famous Physicians).
Efficacy & Actions
Moistens the skin and detoxifies swellings. It is also recorded as having the effects of dispelling wind, moistening dryness, and reducing carbuncles and swellings.
Indications
Indicated for chapped skin, deafness and suppurative otitis media (聤耳), dysphagia with nausea and vomiting (噎膈反胃), drug poisoning, carbuncles and swellings, and scabies and tinea.
Modern Pharmacology
Skin-moisturizing effects: Goose fat is rich in unsaturated fatty acids such as oleic acid, which effectively moisturizes the skin and prevents chapping. Detoxifying and swelling-reducing effects: External application reduces swelling and detoxifies, treating carbuncles, sores, and toxic swellings; internal use can counteract drug poisoning. Wind-dispelling and dryness-moistening effects: It has therapeutic effects on dry skin, itching, and tinea and scabies.
Ingredients
Glyceryl trioleate. Glyceryl tripalmitate. Glyceryl tristearate. The unsaponifiable matter is cholesterol. The main fatty acids are oleic acid, palmitic acid, and stearic acid.
Usage & Dosage
For oral administration: cook and eat, in an appropriate amount. For external use: apply an appropriate amount to the affected area.
Contraindications
Should be used under the guidance of a physician. Do not self-medicate. When applying externally, ensure the affected area is clean. As this product is an animal fat, it should be used with caution in patients with hyperlipidemia.
Selected Formulas
For deafness due to qi congestion in the five viscera (Sheng Hui Fang, Bai'e Gao Zhou) Take 2 liang of white goose fat and 3 he of Japonica rice. Cook together into congee, season with five spices, scallion, and fermented soybeans, and eat on an empty stomach. For counteracting alum‑stone poisoning (Shengji Zonglu) Take this product, grind into fine powder, mix with soybean juice, and take orally. For chapped skin (Bencao Gangmu) Apply white goose fat to the affected area.
