Fu Ling Poria cocos is one of the most frequently used herbs in TCM. It is a fungus that grows around the roots of pine trees and is classified as a dampness-resolving herb. What makes it unique is its neutral nature — it gently promotes urination and dries dampness without damaging the body's fluids. The saying "never use a harsh diuretic when Fu Ling will do" reflects this principle.



What Is Poria cocos?

A fungus in the Polyporaceae family growing symbiotically on pine tree roots. The sclerotium (hardened mycelial mass) is the medicinal part.

Three forms are used:

This is Fu Ling's primary action. It gently increases urine output to remove excess fluid from the body. Used in edema urinary difficulty and generalized fluid retention patterns.

2. Strengthen the Spleen and Harmonize the Middle 健脾和中
Combined with Bai Zhu and Ren Shen Si Jun Zi Tang it supports the Spleen in transforming and transporting fluids and food essence.

3. Calm the Heart and Settle the Spirit 宁心安神
Fu Ling is used in formulas for palpitations insomnia and anxiety particularly those involving Spleen deficiency with phlegm-dampness disturbing the Heart.

Shennong Bencao Jing: "Fu Ling governs pain and rebellion in the chest and ribs, congested qi, coughing with sputum, chest pain. Long-term use calms the spirit nourishes the soul and prevents aging."
