Ligustrum Lucidum and Red Date Tea
Ligustrum Lucidum and Red Date Tea is a traditional Chinese medicinal tea, made with Ligustrum lucidum (privet fruit, Nüzhenzi) and red dates (jujubes) as the main ingredients. Ligustrum lucidum is sweet and bitter in taste, cool in nature, and channels to the Liver and Kidney meridians. It is known for nourishing the liver and kidney, darkening the hair, and brightening the eyes. Red dates are sweet in taste, warm in nature, and channel to the Spleen and Stomach meridians. They are known for tonifying the middle and supplementing qi, nourishing blood and calming the spirit. Together, Ligustrum lucidum nourishes liver and kidney yin, while red dates warm and tonify spleen and stomach qi — one cool and one warm, one clearing and one tonifying — achieving the combined effects of nourishing the liver and kidney, benefiting qi and nourishing blood, calming the spirit and darkening the hair. The tea has a light yellow, clear color, with the sweetness of red dates balancing the slight bitterness of Ligustrum lucidum. This tea is especially suitable for daily consumption by those with liver-kidney yin deficiency, premature greying, dizziness and blurred vision, sore lower back and weak knees, and insomnia.

Main Ingredients
- Ligustrum lucidum (privet fruit) 15g
- Red dates (jujubes)(pitted) 5 pieces
- Rock sugar (or honey) To taste
- Water 800ml
Steps
Rinse the Ligustrum lucidum quickly to remove surface dust. Rinse the red dates, remove pits, and tear into small pieces or cut open (to release more flavor).

Place the Ligustrum lucidum and red dates into a clay pot or stainless steel pot. Add approximately 600-800ml of water. Bring to a boil over high heat, then reduce to low heat and simmer for 15-20 minutes.

Add rock sugar before turning off the heat, stirring until dissolved (if using honey, add after the tea cools below 60°C / 140°F). Strain out the herbal residue and pour the tea into a cup.
