Congees
Orange Peel Porridge
Orange Peel Porridge, also known as Chenpi Porridge, is a traditional Chinese medicinal congee made from japonica rice and dried orange peel (Chenpi). Chenpi, the dried mature peel of an orange, is pungent and bitter in taste, warm in nature, and enters the Spleen and Lung meridians. It is known for regulating Qi and strengthening the Spleen, and drying Dampness and resolving Phlegm. When cooked with rice, it not only makes a simple and nutritious meal but also maximizes the medicinal effects of the orange peel. This porridge is effective for promoting Qi flow, strengthening the stomach, relieving coughs, and reducing phlegm. It also helps improve blood circulation and regulate bowel function. With the subtle, aromatic flavor of orange peel, this congee is especially suitable for relieving symptoms caused by stagnation of Spleen and Stomach Qi, such as abdominal distension, poor digestion, loss of appetite, as well as cough with excessive phlegm due to Dampness-Phlegm.

TCM Notes
Modern Nutrition & Pharmacological Research: Regulating Qi and Strengthening the Spleen: The volatile oils (mainly limonene) in Chenpi gently stimulate the gastrointestinal tract, promoting the secretion of gastric juices and aiding digestion. This helps relieve symptoms of Spleen-Stomach Qi stagnation such as abdominal bloating and loss of appetite. Drying Dampness and Resolving Phlegm: Chenpi can dry Dampness by regulating fluid metabolism, thereby reducing the production of Phlegm-Dampness. It is effective for cough with excessive phlegm (especially thin, white phlegm). Boosting Immunity: Japonica rice can enhance immune function and improve blood circulation, which, combined with Chenpi, contributes to overall health. Regulating Bowel Function: Chenpi helps regulate gastrointestinal motility, while the coarse fiber in rice aids peristalsis, working together to regulate bowel function and prevent constipation.
