Demystifying TCM
The 9 Body Constitutions in TCM: Which One Are You?
TCM classifies people into nine body constitution types — each with distinct characteristics, vulnerabilities, and dietary needs. Learn about each type, how to identify your own constitution, and how to balance it through diet and lifestyle.
A Personal NoteOne of the most useful concepts I discovered in TCM is body constitution (体质). It explains why some people feel cold year-round while others feel hot, why some gain weight easily while others stay thin no matter what, and — most importantly — why there is no single "healthy diet" that works for everyone. Your constitution is your baseline. Understanding it is the first step toward personalized health.
The Nine Types
1. Qi Deficiency (气虚质)
Characteristics: Fatigued, weak voice, poor appetite, soft muscles, sweaty, catches colds easily.
Tongue: Pale, teeth marks on edges. Pulse: Weak.

2. Yang Deficiency (阳虚质)
Characteristics: Cold hands and feet, prefers warm weather, low energy, frequent urination, pale complexion.
Tongue: Pale and moist. Pulse: Deep, weak.
Diet: Ginger, cinnamon, lamb, leeks, walnuts. Avoid cold drinks and raw foods.
3. Yin Deficiency (阴虚质)
Characteristics: Thin body, warm hands and feet, dry skin/throat/stools, likes winter, restless, insomnia.
Tongue: Red, little or no coating. Pulse: Thin, rapid.
Diet: Pears, goji berries, lily bulb, sesame, tofu, soy milk. Avoid spicy foods, alcohol, excessive exercise.
4. Phlegm-Dampness (痰湿质)

Quick Self-Check
Answer these questions to find your likely constitution:
- Do you feel hot or cold most of the time? (Hot → yin deficiency; Cold → yang/qi deficiency)
- Do you gain weight easily? (Yes → phlegm-dampness or qi deficiency)
- Do you get sick often? (Yes → qi deficiency)
- Is your skin oily? (Yes → damp-heat or phlegm-dampness)
- Do you have allergies or sensitive skin? (Yes → special constitution)
- Are you prone to worrying or mood swings? (Yes → qi stagnation)
- Do you bruise easily or have dark spots? (Yes → blood stasis)
Most people have a primary constitution with secondary characteristics from one or two others. The goal is not to fit perfectly into one category but to know your tendencies and adjust accordingly.
