Autumn Harvest: A TCM Guide to Seasonal Eating

As autumn arrives, TCM's seasonal eating principles shift from cooling summer foods to warming, moistening autumn fare. Learn which autumn harvest foods support Lung health, boost immunity, and prepare the body for winter.

A Personal NoteOne of the simplest TCM practices I adopted is eating seasonally. In summer, the body naturally craves cooling foods; in autumn, it craves warming, grounding foods. This is not a cultural preference — it is the body responding to the changing relationship between internal and external environments. Eating what grows in the current season is one of the easiest ways to align with TCM principles.

Autumn Eating Principles

Shift from cooling to warming: Summer foods (watermelon, cucumber, cold salads) should gradually give way to warming, cooked foods

Increase moistening foods: Autumn dryness requires foods that moisten the Lungs and protect mucus membranes

Support the Lung: The Lung is the organ of autumn. Foods with a white color and moistening quality benefit the Lung

Top Autumn Foods in TCM

Pears — The quintessential autumn fruit. Moistens the Lungs, stops dry cough, generates fluids. Eat fresh or steamed with rock sugar.

White fungus (Snow fungus, 银耳) — The top Lung-moistening food. Cook into a soup with goji berries and red dates.

Daikon radish (白萝卜) — Digests stagnation, transforms phlegm, reduces bloating from heavier autumn foods.

Pumpkin and squash — Warm and sweet, strengthen the Spleen. The deep orange color connects to the Earth element, supporting digestion during the seasonal transition.

Chinese yam (Shan Yao, 山药) — Tonifies the Lung, Spleen, and Kidney simultaneously. A perfect autumn food.

Sesame seeds (black) — Moistens the intestines and nourishes the Liver and Kidney.

Mushrooms — Shiitake, wood ear, and enoki strengthen the immune system.

Almonds — Moistens the Lungs and stops cough. A staple autumn food.
