Spatholobi Caulis

Jixueteng (Spatholobus Stem) is the dried vine stem of Spatholobus suberectus Dunn, a plant of the Fabaceae family. It is named “chicken blood vine” because when cut, it exudes a red sap resembling chicken blood.

Indications
Irregular menstruation, dysmenorrhea, amenorrhea, rheumatic arthralgia, numbness of the limbs, sallow complexion due to blood deficiency, and paralysis.
Modern Pharmacology
Improvement of the blood system: Increases white blood cells, platelets, and red blood cells; promotes hematopoietic function. Anticoagulant and antithrombotic effects: Inhibits platelet aggregation and prolongs clotting time. Flavonoids: Formononetin, daidzein, genistein, spatholobol, etc. Triterpenoids: Lupeol, β‑sitosterol, etc. Phenolic acids: Protocatechuic acid, syringic acid, etc. Others: Tannins, polysaccharides, volatile oils, etc.
Usage & Dosage
Internal use: 9–15 g in decoction (a large dose may be increased to 30 g); or steeped in wine; or used in pills or powders. External use: Appropriate amount, decocted for washing, or crushed and applied topically to the affected area.
Contraindications
Contraindicated populations: Contraindicated in pregnant women; use with caution in those with excessive menstruation. Precautions for use: Should not be used alone in cases of Yin deficiency with blazing fire. Compatibility: Often combined with Angelicae Sinensis Radix (Danggui), Chuanxiong Rhizoma (Chuanxiong), Rehmanniae Radix Praeparata (Shudihuang), etc., for patterns of deficiency and blood stasis.

Daily Consumption
1. Jixueteng and Red Date Soup Ingredients: 15 g Jixueteng (Spatholobi Caulis), 10 red dates (Jujube), 100 g lean pork. Preparation: Stew all ingredients together to make a soup. Action: Tonifies blood and activates blood circulation. Used for irregular menstruation due to blood deficiency. 2. Jixueteng Wine Ingredients: 30 g Jixueteng (Spatholobi Caulis), 15 g Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), 500 ml white liquor (baijiu). Preparation: Seal and steep for 15 days, then drink. Dosage: 10–15 ml per day. Action: Used for rheumatic arthralgia and amenorrhea due to blood stasis.
