Shaoze Point (SI-1 / Small Marsh, also known as Xiaoji, Xiaojie)
Drains heat and opens the orifices, unblocks the collaterals and promotes lactation. Based on its properties, it is clinically used for insufficient lactation and febrile diseases.
Indications
Sore throat, coma, febrile diseases, postpartum hypogalactia, and neurogenic headache. (1) Breast disorders: Hypogalactia, acute mastitis. (2) Head, face and orificial disorders: Ear disorders (tinnitus, deafness), sore throat, red and painful eyes. (3) Emergency: Stroke, coma, shock, heatstroke. (4) Upper limb disorders: Finger numbness and pain, posterolateral shoulder-arm pain.
Precise Location
Located on the Small Intestine Meridian, on the ulnar side of the distal phalanx of the little finger, 0.1 cun lateral to the nail corner.
Location Method
With the back of the hand facing up and palm facing down, lightly hold the little finger with the other hand, bend the thumb – the point is where the thumbnail tip reaches at the lower edge of the lateral nail corner.
Massage Method
Hold the little finger with the other hand, bend the thumb and press vertically with the thumbnail – a strong stinging sensation will occur. Apply for 1–3 minutes per session. Therapeutic actions: Clears heat and benefits the throat, promotes lactation and opens the orifices.
Compatibility
Neurogenic headache: Combine with Zhiyin (BL-67), Houxi (SI-3), and Qiangjian (GV-18). Disease overview: Neurogenic headache primarily includes tension headache, functional headache, and vascular neurogenic headache – often triggered by mental stress and anger – characterized by persistent dull pressure and heaviness, with some patients describing a "tight band" sensation. Usually bilateral (temporal, occipital, vertex, or entire head). Massage sequence: Pinch Zhiyin (0.1 cun lateral to the nail corner of the little toe) for 2 minutes; press Houxi (posterior to the 5th metacarpophalangeal joint, at the junction of red and white skin) 20 times; massage Qiangjian for 2 minutes; finally massage Shaoze for 3 minutes. Acute mastitis: Combine with Rugen (ST-18), Tianxi (SP-18), Wuyi (ST-15), Shaoze (SI-1), and Tongziliao (GB-1). Sore throat: Combine with Hegu (LI-4), Shaoshang (LU-11), Renying (ST-9), and Shaoze (SI-1). Acute mastitis: Combine with Tanzhong (RN-17), Hegu (LI-4), Jianjing (GB-21), and Taichong (LR-3). Insufficient lactation: Combine with Tanzhong (RN-17) and Rugen (ST-18). Sore throat: Combine with Shaoshang (LU-11) and Hegu (LI-4). Ear disorders: Combine with Tinggong (SI-19) and Yifeng (TE-17). Febrile disease with coma: Combine with Shuigou (GV-26), Neiguan (PC-6), and bloodletting at the twelve Jing-Well points (EX-UE12).
Efficacy & Actions
Shaoze is the Jing-Well point of the Hand Taiyang Small Intestine Meridian, corresponding to the Metal element in the five-element theory. It clears heat and benefits the throat, revives the spirit and promotes lactation. It is a commonly used point for insufficient lactation and an emergency point for yang-excess mental closure patterns – clinical application often uses pricking bleeding or reducing techniques. According to the Lingshu · Benshu: "Aliases: Xiaoji, Xiaojie. Shao means small; Ze means moistening. Heart heat is transformed through the fire mansion of the Small Intestine – hence the name Shaoze." When experiencing sore throat with difficulty swallowing, or when transporting a stroke patient with unconsciousness to the hospital, pinching this point with moderate pressure can quickly relieve throat pain, promote qi and blood circulation, and help revive the unconscious patient. (1) Key Point for Promoting Lactation: This point has been an effective lactation-promoting point throughout history and remains the first choice clinically. The Qianjin Yifang states: "For women without milk, needle both sides of the little finger nail at a depth of one fen... to test its efficacy, needle one side first – the effect is truly miraculous." The Zhubing Yuanhou Lun states: "For women, the Taiyang and Shaoyin meridians descend as menstrual blood and ascend as breast milk." Shaoze is the Jing-Well point of the Small Intestine Meridian and connects with the Heart Meridian. The Small Intestine separates clear from turbid, and the Heart governs the blood vessels – all providing the material basis for milk production, making it clinically specific. (2) Treats ENT and Ophthalmological Disorders: As a Small Intestine Meridian point – the meridian ascends from the hand to the head, widely distributed in the head and face, reaching the inner and outer canthi, beside the nose, inside the ear, and beside the throat – it treats head, face, and orificial disorders such as tinnitus, deafness, epistaxis, red and painful eyes, corneal opacity, and sore throat. As a Jing-Well point, it is especially suitable for pricking bleeding to drain heat and pathogens. (3) Other Therapeutic Effects: As a Jing-Well point with emergency properties, it is used for shock and coma. As the Small Intestine is internally-externally related to the Heart, it regulates the spirit and unblocks blood vessels – treating heart pain, stroke, and epilepsy. It also treats little finger pain and numbness – the Zhenjiu Jiayijing states: "Chills with inability to use the little finger... Shaoze is the primary point" – relaxing tendons and unblocking collaterals.
