Indications
Shoulder and arm soreness, weakness and pain, shoulder swelling, and cervical scrofula (lymphadenopathy).
Precise Location
In the scapular region, directly above the end of the posterior axillary fold, in the depression below the lower edge of the scapular spine. With the arm adducted, the point is at the intersection of the vertical line from the end of the posterior axillary fold and the lower edge of the scapular spine.
Location Method
Sit upright or lie prone with the arm adducted. The point is in the depression directly above the end of the posterior axillary fold at the lower edge of the scapular spine – firm pressure produces a distinct sore and distending sensation.
Massage Method
① Massage: Pinch and press with the thumb tip. ② Scraping therapy: Scrape from top to bottom. Pinching and pressing Naoshu with the thumb tip about 200 times treats frozen shoulder. Therapeutic actions: Relaxes the sinews and unblocks the collaterals, dispels wind and disperses nodules, reduces swelling and relieves pain.
Compatibility
Acute mastitis: Combine with Jianjing (GB-21).
Efficacy & Actions
This point belongs to the Hand Taiyang Small Intestine Meridian and is the meeting point of the Small Intestine Meridian with the Yang Qiao Vessel and the Yang Wei Vessel. It relaxes the sinews and unblocks the collaterals, dispels wind and disperses nodules, reduces swelling and relieves pain. It is a commonly used point for treating shoulder-arm and neck disorders. First documented in Zhenjiu Jiayijing. "Nao" refers to the upper arm and shoulder region; "Shu" means point of transport. Located in the shoulder-arm region where meridian qi is transported – hence the name Naoshu (Upper Arm Shu).
