Indications
Spermatorrhea, impotence, enuresis (urinary incontinence), difficult urination, diarrhea, lumbar and spinal stiffness with pain, lower limb flaccidity/bi-syndrome, leukorrhea, irregular menstruation, and lumbar and knee soreness and weakness.
Precise Location
In the spinal region, in the depression below the spinous process of the 2nd lumbar vertebra, on the posterior midline.
Location Method
Sit upright or lie prone. Locate the intersection of the line connecting the highest points of both iliac crests with the spine (approximately at the 4th lumbar vertebra), then count upward 2 vertebrae to the spinous process of the 2nd lumbar vertebra – the point is in the depression below this spinous process. Alternatively, locate the point at the intersection of the horizontal line of the umbilicus and the posterior midline.
Massage Method
Massage: Press and knead with the thumb. Press and knead Mingmen with the thumb about 200 times, or for 3–5 minutes, to treat lumbar and leg pain, spermatorrhea, and enuresis. Therapeutic actions: Tonifies the kidney and strengthens yang, warms yang and disperses cold, strengthens the lumbar region and kidneys, and consolidates essence and stops leukorrhea.
Compatibility
Urinary and reproductive disorders: Combine with Shenshu (BL-23), Baliao (BL-31–34), Guanyuan (RN-4), and Sanyinjiao (SP-6). Spermatorrhea and impotence: Combine with Shenshu (BL-23), Guanyuan (RN-4), and Sanyinjiao (SP-6). Enuresis and difficult urination: Combine with Zhongji (RN-3), Sanyinjiao (SP-6), and Pangguangshu (BL-28). Lumbar and spinal stiffness with pain: Combine with Shenshu (BL-23) and Weizhong (BL-40). Lower limb flaccidity/bi-syndrome: Combine with Huantiao (GB-30), Yanglingquan (GB-34), and Zusanli (ST-36). Diarrhea: Combine with Tianshu (ST-25) and Zusanli (ST-36). Leukorrhea and irregular menstruation: Combine with Guanyuan (RN-4), Sanyinjiao (SP-6), and Xuehai (SP-10).
Efficacy & Actions
This point belongs to the Governor Vessel (Du Mai) and serves as the gateway to life. It tonifies the kidney and strengthens yang, warms yang and disperses cold, strengthens the lumbar region and kidneys, and consolidates essence and stops leukorrhea. It is a key point for treating male and female reproductive, urinary, and lumbar-spinal disorders. First documented in Zhenjiu Jiayijing. "Ming" refers to life; "Men" means gate or door. Located between the two kidneys, this point is the root of life and the residence of primordial qi – hence the name Mingmen (Life Gate). It is also known as "Shulei" and "Jinggong."
Contraindications
Located in the lumbar region – needling depth should be carefully controlled, generally 0.5–1 cun vertically, avoiding excessive depth. Moxibustion is permissible, especially effective for warming and tonifying kidney yang.
