Precise Location
In the gluteal region, at the midpoint of the line connecting the anterior superior iliac spine and the most prominent point of the greater trochanter of the femur.
Location Method
The anterior superior iliac spine is the bony prominence on the lateral abdomen, and the greater trochanter is the most prominent bony landmark on the lateral hip. The point is at the midpoint of the line connecting these two landmarks – firm pressure produces a distinct sore and distending sensation.
Massage Method
Massage: Press and knead with the thumb. Press and knead Juliao with the thumb about 200 times, or for 3–5 minutes, to treat lumbar and leg bi-pain and lower limb flaccidity/bi-syndrome. Therapeutic actions: Relaxes the sinews and unblocks the collaterals, strengthens the lumbar region and legs, dispels wind and dampness, and unblocks the collaterals and relieves pain.
Compatibility
Lumbar and leg bi-pain and lower limb flaccidity/bi-syndrome: Combine with Huantiao (GB-30) and Yanglingquan (GB-34). Hip joint pain: Combine with Huantiao (GB-30), Chengfu (BL-36), and Weizhong (BL-40). Paralysis: Combine with Huantiao (GB-30), Yanglingquan (GB-34), Xuanzhong (GB-39), and Zusanli (ST-36). Foot atrophy: Combine with Zusanli (ST-36) and Jiexi (ST-41). Hernia: Combine with Dadun (LR-1), Guilai (ST-29), and Taichong (LR-3).
Efficacy & Actions
This point belongs to the Foot Shaoyang Gallbladder Meridian and is the meeting point of the Gallbladder Meridian and the Yang Qiao Vessel. It relaxes the sinews and unblocks the collaterals, strengthens the lumbar region and legs, dispels wind and dampness, and unblocks the collaterals and relieves pain. It is a commonly used key point for treating lumbar, leg, and lower limb disorders. First documented in Zhenjiu Jiayijing. "Ju" means to dwell or reside; "Liao" means bone crevice or gap. Located in the bony gap of the hip region, this point is where meridian qi resides – hence the name Juliao (Dwelling Bone Crevice).
