Indications

Primarily treats throat obstruction, swollen and painful throat, swelling of the jaw, shoulder and back pain, chills with shivering, nasal congestion with epistaxis (nosebleeds), frequent startle/fright, toothache, yellow discoloration of the eyes, dry mouth, deviated mouth, difficulty swallowing / blockage of food intake, and fluid retention/constipation due to exogenous febrile diseases.

Precise Location

On the hand, at the distal end of the radial side of the 2nd metacarpophalangeal joint, at the junction of the red (volar) and white (dorsal) skin.

Location Method

Slightly clench the fist. The point is located in the depression anterior to the radial side of the 2nd metacarpophalangeal joint of the index finger, exactly at the transition between the red and white skin. (For practical operation, place the palm sideways, slightly flex the index finger, and press into the depression just in front of the joint; a distinct sore and distending sensation indicates the correct point.)

Massage Method

① Massage: Press and knead with the thumb pad. ② Moxibustion: Apply mild-warm moxa stick over the point. Press downward firmly on this point with the thumb pad for 1–3 minutes per session. For treating a stye (hordeolum), apply pressure specifically to the Erjian point on the same side as the affected eye. If the condition does not resolve, firmly pinch this point alternately with the thumb and index finger, repeating the pinching motion 30 times; the stye will then either heal spontaneously or suppurate and resolve quickly.

Compatibility

For eczema: Erjian (LI-2) combined with Neiting (ST-44). For toothache: Erjian (LI-2) combined with Hegu (LI-4) to effectively relieve dental pain.
