Indications
Wind headache (recurrent headache), foot sprain (ankle sprain), headache, epilepsy, infantile convulsions, lumbar and knee pain, lower limb flaccidity/bi-syndrome, and lateral ankle swelling with pain.
Precise Location
On the lateral side of the foot, directly below the anterior border of the lateral malleolus, posterior to the tuberosity of the 5th metatarsal bone, in the depression below the cuboid bone.
Location Method
Sit upright or lie supine. On the lateral side of the foot, vertically downward from the anterior border of the lateral malleolus – the point is in the depression posterior to the tuberosity of the 5th metatarsal bone, where firm pressure produces a distinct sore and distending sensation.
Massage Method
Massage: Press and knead with the thumb. Press and knead Jinmen with the thumb about 200 times, or for 3–5 minutes, to treat foot pain, headache, and related conditions. Therapeutic actions: Relaxes the sinews and unblocks the collaterals, unblocks the meridians and relieves pain, clears heat and disperses wind.
Compatibility
Foot sprain and lateral ankle swelling with pain: Combine with Jiexi (ST-41), Qiuxu (GB-40), and Kunlun (BL-60). Wind headache and headache: Combine with Fengchi (GB-20), Taiyang (EX-HN5), and Baihui (GV-20). Epilepsy and infantile convulsions: Combine with Shuigou (GV-26), Dazhui (GV-14), and Fenglong (ST-40). Lumbar and knee pain, lower limb flaccidity/bi-syndrome: Combine with Weizhong (BL-40), Chengshan (BL-57), and Yanglingquan (GB-34).
Efficacy & Actions
This point belongs to the Foot Taiyang Bladder Meridian and is the Xi-Cleft point of this meridian, as well as the meeting point of the Yang Wei Vessel. It relaxes the sinews and unblocks the collaterals, unblocks the meridians and relieves pain, clears heat and disperses wind. It is a commonly used key point for treating acute head and foot disorders. First documented in Zhenjiu Jiayijing. "Jin" means metal or firm; "Men" means gate or door. As the Xi-Cleft point of the Bladder Meridian, where qi deeply converges, it is like a gate cast of metal – hence the name Jinmen (Golden Gate). It is also known as "Guanliang."
Contraindications
Located on the lateral foot, needling depth should be carefully controlled – generally 0.3–0.5 cun vertically to avoid periosteal injury. Moxibustion is permissible.
