Indications
Knee joint pain, dribbling urination (difficulty with interrupted urine flow), enuresis (urinary incontinence), urinary retention, and constipation. This point belongs to the Foot Taiyang Bladder Meridian and is the Luo-Connecting point of this meridian, as well as the Lower He-Sea point of the Triple Burner Meridian. It regulates the Triple Burner, promotes diuresis and relieves strangury, and relaxes the sinews and unblocks the collaterals. It is a commonly used key point for treating urinary and knee disorders. First documented in Lingshu · Benshu. "Wei" means to bend; "Yang" refers to the lateral side. Located on the lateral side of the popliteal crease, opposite Weizhong (BL-40) on the medial side – hence the name Weiyang (Yang Side of the Crease).
Precise Location
In the knee region, at the popliteal crease, at the medial edge of the biceps femoris tendon. The point is on the lateral side of the popliteal crease, at the medial edge of the biceps femoris muscle.
Location Method
Sit upright or lie prone with the knee flexed. The point is in the depression at the lateral end of the popliteal crease, at the medial edge of the biceps femoris tendon – firm pressure produces a distinct sore and distending sensation.
Massage Method
① Massage: Press, knead, or pluck with the thumb. ② Scraping therapy: Scrape from the middle outward. Press, knead, or pluck Weiyang with the thumb about 200 times, or for 3–5 minutes, to treat knee joint pain, urinary retention, and enuresis. Therapeutic actions: Regulates the Triple Burner, promotes diuresis and relieves strangury, relaxes the sinews and unblocks the collaterals.
Compatibility
Difficult urination: Combine with Sanjiaoshu (BL-22) and Shenshu (BL-23). Urinary retention and enuresis: Combine with Zhongji (RN-3), Sanyinjiao (SP-6), and Pangguangshu (BL-28). Knee joint pain: Combine with Xiyan (EX-LE4, EX-LE5) and Yanglingquan (GB-34). Constipation: Combine with Tianshu (ST-25) and Shangjuxu (ST-37). Lumbar and spinal stiffness with pain: Combine with Weizhong (BL-40) and Shenshu (BL-23).
Contraindications
Located in the posterior knee region, needling should not be too deep – generally 0.5–1 cun vertically to avoid injury to blood vessels and nerves. Moxibustion is permissible.
