Indications
Lower abdominal pain, spermatorrhea, impotence, genital pain, edema, difficult urination, lumbar and spinal stiffness with pain, irregular menstruation, and leukorrhea.
Precise Location
In the lumbar region, below the spinous process of the 2nd lumbar vertebra, 3 cun lateral to the posterior midline.
Location Method
Sit upright or lie prone. First locate the spinous process of the 2nd lumbar vertebra (at the level of the umbilicus) – the point is 4 finger-widths (approximately 3 cun) lateral to the lower edge of this spinous process. This point is level with Shenshu (BL-23), 1.5 cun lateral to Shenshu.
Massage Method
Massage: Press and knead with the thumb. Press and knead Zhishi with the thumb about 200 times, or for 3–5 minutes daily, to treat lower abdominal pain and constipation. Therapeutic actions: Tonifies the kidney and secures essence, strengthens the lumbar region and spine, unblocks the water passages, regulates the lower jiao.
Compatibility
Spermatorrhea: Combine with Mingmen (GV-4). Impotence: Combine with Shenshu (BL-23), Guanyuan (RN-4), and Sanyinjiao (SP-6). Lumbar and spinal stiffness with pain: Combine with Shenshu (BL-23), Weizhong (BL-40), and Mingmen (GV-4). Difficult urination and edema: Combine with Sanjiaoshu (BL-22), Yinlingquan (SP-9), and Shuifen (RN-9). Irregular menstruation and leukorrhea: Combine with Guanyuan (RN-4), Sanyinjiao (SP-6), and Shenshu (BL-23). Lower abdominal pain: Combine with Qihai (RN-6) and Guanyuan (RN-4).
Efficacy & Actions
This point belongs to the Foot Taiyang Bladder Meridian. It tonifies the kidney and secures essence, strengthens the lumbar region and spine, unblocks the water passages, and regulates the lower jiao. It is a commonly used key point for treating kidney deficiency and urogenital disorders. First documented in Zhenjiu Jiayijing. "Zhi" refers to the will or ambition – the kidney stores the zhi; "Shi" means chamber or residence. Located in the lumbar region, this point is where the kidney's will resides – hence the name Zhishi (Will Chamber). It is also known as "Jinggong" (Essence Palace).
Contraindications
Located in the lumbar region, needling should not be too deep – generally 0.8–1.2 cun vertically to avoid injury to internal organs. Moxibustion is permissible and is especially suitable for tonifying the kidney.
