Indications
Stomach pain, vomiting, poor appetite, acute intestinal pain, abdominal distension, indigestion, and abdominal pain.
Precise Location
In the upper abdomen, 3 cun above the umbilicus, on the anterior midline.
Location Method
Lie supine. On the anterior midline, measure 4 finger-widths (approximately 3 cun) upward from the center of the umbilicus – that is the point.
Massage Method
Massage: Press and knead with the thumb. Press and knead Jianli with the thumb about 200 times, or for 3–5 minutes, to treat stomach pain and abdominal pain. Therapeutic actions: Strengthens the spleen and harmonizes the stomach, promotes digestion and guides stagnation, regulates qi and relieves pain, and descends rebellious qi and stops vomiting.
Compatibility
Edema: Combine with Shuifen (RN-9). Stomach pain: Combine with Zhongwan (RN-12) and Zusanli (ST-36). Vomiting and poor appetite: Combine with Neiguan (PC-6) and Zhongwan (RN-12). Acute intestinal pain and abdominal distension: Combine with Tianshu (ST-25) and Zusanli (ST-36).
Efficacy & Actions
This point belongs to the Conception Vessel (Ren Mai). It strengthens the spleen and harmonizes the stomach, promotes digestion and guides stagnation, regulates qi and relieves pain, and descends rebellious qi and stops vomiting. It is a commonly used key point for treating digestive system disorders. First documented in Zhenjiu Jiayijing. "Jian" means to establish or strengthen; "Li" refers to the interior. Located below Zhongwan (RN-12), this point is where spleen and stomach qi is established and strengthened – hence the name Jianli (Establishing the Interior).
