Efficacy & Actions

Guanyuan belongs to the Conception Vessel (Ren Mai) and is the meeting point of the Ren Mai, the Chong Vessel, and the three yin meridians of the foot, as well as the Mu-Front point where Small Intestine meridian qi converges. It cultivates and supplements primordial qi, warms the kidney and strengthens yang, benefits qi and secures collapse, and guides heat and relieves strangury. It is a key point for health preservation, a commonly used point for all types of deficiency and consumptive disorders, and a primary point for male and female gynecological disorders. First documented in Lingshu · Hanre. "Guan" means to store or close; "Yuan" refers to primordial qi. This point is where yin-yang and primordial qi meet and where essence qi gathers – hence the name Guanyuan (Pass of the Primordial Qi). It is also known as "Xiaji," "Sanjiejiao," "Cimen," "Dazhongji," "Dantian," "Guanyuan," "Dahai," and "Chanmen." (1) Key Point for Health Preservation: This point is where primordial qi gathers and is stored, where the qi of the Triple Burner resides, where the dynamic qi between the kidneys originates, and the root of the twelve meridians and the foundation of the five zang and six fu. The Bianque Xinshu states: "When people are without illness, regular moxibustion at Guanyuan, Qihai, Mingmen, and Zhongwan – though it may not grant immortality, can preserve health for over a hundred years." Moxibustion is commonly used, especially during the Dog Days of summer. (2) Key Point for Supplementing Deficiency After Chronic Illness: Zhu Danxi stated: "Severe collapse after major illness is due to yin deficiency – moxibustion at Dantian (Guanyuan) supplements yang; when yang is generated, yin grows accordingly." The Bianque Xinshu records: "Elderly wheezing is due to kidney deficiency failing to receive qi – moxibust Guanyuan." For chronic deficiency, qi depletion, or various chronic conditions with insufficient primordial qi, this point is selected – moxibustion is commonly used. (3) Common Key Point for Male and Female Reproductive Disorders: Located in the lower abdomen, corresponding to the bladder and reproductive system – according to "where the point is located, there it treats" – it treats both reproductive and urinary disorders. Primordial qi is the foundation of life activities – deficiency gives rise to numerous disorders: urinary frequency, urgency, retention, enuresis; and reproductive disorders such as spermatorrhea, impotence, premature ejaculation, irregular menstruation, dysmenorrhea, amenorrhea, leukorrhea, metrorrhagia, uterine prolapse, and infertility. Needling, moxibustion, or both may be used based on the condition. (4) Common Point for Intestinal Disorders: As the Mu-Front point of the Small Intestine – fu-organ disorders are treated with Mu-Front and Lower He-Sea points – it regulates the Small Intestine's function of separating clear from turbid, effectively treating diarrhea, constipation, dysentery, intestinal adhesions, and hernia.

Contraindications

The bladder should be emptied before needling to prevent injury. Moxibustion is used for deficiency patterns and health preservation; needling is used for excess patterns. Contraindicated in pregnant women. Moxibustion is permissible and is a commonly used point for moxibustion in clinical practice.
