Indications
Proneness to fright (startle easily), manic disorders, and pain on the dorsum of the foot. This point belongs to the Foot Yangming Stomach Meridian and is the Yuan-Source point of the Stomach Meridian. It calms the spirit and relieves fright, unblocks the collaterals and relieves pain. It is a commonly used point for treating mental disorders and foot pain. First documented in Lingshu · Benshu. "Chong" means thoroughfare or main passage; "Yang" refers to the Yang meridian. Located on the high point of the dorsum of the foot, at the thoroughfare of Stomach Meridian qi – hence the name Chongyang (Yang Thoroughfare). It is also known as "Huiyuan," "Huigu," and "Fuyang."
Precise Location
On the dorsum of the foot, at the joint between the base of the 2nd metatarsal bone and the intermediate cuneiform bone, at the pulsation of the dorsalis pedis artery.
Location Method
Sit upright or lie supine. The point is at the highest point of the dorsum of the foot, anterior to the joint between the base of the 2nd metatarsal and the intermediate cuneiform bone, where the dorsalis pedis artery pulsates. Firm pressure produces a distinct sore and distending sensation.
Massage Method
① Massage: Press and knead with the thumb. ② Scraping therapy: Scrape from the ankle toward the toes. Press and knead Chongyang with the thumb about 200 times, or for 3–5 minutes, to treat pain on the dorsum of the foot. Therapeutic actions: Calms the spirit and relieves fright, unblocks the collaterals and relieves pain.
