Indications

Stomach pain, abdominal pain, abdominal distension, hernia, and dysmenorrhea. This point belongs to the Foot Yangming Stomach Meridian. It regulates qi and relieves pain, regulates menstruation and guides stagnation. It is a commonly used point for treating abdominal pain and gynecological disorders. First documented in Zhenjiu Jiayijing. "Wai" means outer or external; "Ling" means mound or prominence. Located in the abdomen at a muscular prominence, 1 cun below the umbilicus and 2 cun lateral to the midline, opposite to Neiling – hence the name Wailing (Outer Mound).

Precise Location

In the lower abdomen, 1 cun below the umbilicus (center of the navel) and 2 cun lateral to the anterior midline.

Location Method

Lie supine. Measure 1 cun downward from the umbilicus (Shenque, RN-8) and 2 cun lateral to the anterior midline – the point is where firm pressure produces a distinct sore and distending sensation.

Massage Method

Massage: Press and knead with the thumb or the palm root. Press and knead Wailing with the thumb or palm root about 200 times, or for 3–5 minutes, to treat abdominal pain, constipation, and diarrhea. Therapeutic actions: Regulates qi and relieves pain, regulates menstruation and guides stagnation.

Compatibility

Dysmenorrhea: Combine with Zigong (EX-CA1) and Sanyinjiao (SP-6).
