Indications

Lumbar and knee pain, and soreness, weakness, and numbness of the lower limbs. This point belongs to the Foot Yangming Stomach Meridian. It relaxes the sinews and unblocks the collaterals, and strengthens the lumbar region and knees. It is a commonly used point for treating lower limb disorders. First documented in Lingshu · Jingmai. "Bi" refers to the thigh or femoral region; "Guan" means pass or gateway. Located on the anterior thigh, this point serves as a key passage for qi and blood circulation to the lower limbs – hence the name Biguan (Thigh Pass).

Precise Location

In the anterior femoral region, in the depression between the three muscles: the proximal end of the rectus femoris, the sartorius, and the tensor fasciae latae.

Location Method

Lie supine with the hip flexed. The point is at the intersection of the line connecting the anterior superior iliac spine and the lateral border of the patellar base, with the horizontal line level with the perineum – firm pressure produces a distinct sensation of soreness and distension.

Massage Method

① Massage: Press and knead with the thumb. ② Moxibustion: Apply mild-warm moxa stick. Press and knead Biguan with the thumb about 200 times, or for 3–5 minutes, to treat lumbar and leg pain. Therapeutic actions: Relaxes the sinews and unblocks the collaterals, strengthens the lumbar region and knees.
