Indications

Cold pain of the legs and knees, numbness, and lower limb immobility. This point belongs to the Foot Yangming Stomach Meridian. It dispels cold and relieves pain, relaxes the sinews and unblocks the collaterals. It is a commonly used point for treating lower limb and lumbar-knee disorders. First documented in Zhenjiu Jiayijing. "Yin" refers to cold and dampness; "Shi" means market or gathering place. Located on the anterior thigh, this point is where yin qi gathers – hence the name Yinshi (Yin Market).

Precise Location

In the anterior femoral region, 3 cun above the base of the patella, at the lateral border of the rectus femoris tendon. Sit upright with the knee flexed – measure 4 finger-widths (approximately 3 cun) straight upward from the lateral side of the patellar base; the point is where pressure produces pain.

Location Method

Sit upright with the knee flexed. Measure 4 finger-widths (approximately 3 cun) straight upward from the upper lateral edge of the patella, at the lateral border of the rectus femoris tendon – the point is where firm pressure produces obvious pain or a sore-distending sensation.

Massage Method

① Massage: Press and knead with the thumb. ② Moxibustion: Apply mild-warm moxa stick. Press and knead Yinshi with the thumb about 200 times, or for 3–5 minutes, to treat lumbar and leg pain. Therapeutic actions: Dispels cold and relieves pain, relaxes the sinews and unblocks the collaterals.
