Indications

Constipation, abdominal pain, lower abdominal distension with pain, dysmenorrhea, and difficult urination. This point belongs to the Foot Yangming Stomach Meridian. It unblocks the water passages, regulates qi and relieves pain, regulates menstruation and guides stagnation. It is a commonly used point for treating abdominal and urogenital disorders. First documented in Zhenjiu Jiayijing. "Shui" means water or fluid; "Dao" means passage or pathway. Located in the lower abdomen, this point regulates the water passages and promotes diuresis to reduce swelling – hence the name Shuidao (Water Passage).

Precise Location

In the lower abdomen, 3 cun below the umbilicus (center of the navel) and 2 cun lateral to the anterior midline.

Location Method

Lie supine. Measure 4 horizontal finger-widths (approximately 3 cun) downward from the umbilicus along the midline, then 3 horizontal finger-widths (approximately 2 cun) laterally – that is the point.

Massage Method

① Massage: Press and knead with the thumb or the palm root. ② Moxibustion: Apply mild-warm moxa stick. Press and knead Shuidao with the thumb or palm root about 200 times, or for 3–5 minutes, to treat lower abdominal pain and difficult urination. Therapeutic actions: Unblocks the water passages, regulates qi and relieves pain, regulates menstruation and guides stagnation.

Dysmenorrhea: Combine with Sanyinjiao (SP-6) and Zhongji (RN-3).
